Macfarlane 2009

How big is too big to run Macfarlane? Or is there no such thing?

For Race To Heal and everyone else...

Posting this for the women of Race to Heal and everyone else who is racing for a purpose, live strong - just do it and race from the heart…

Ladder Training for Pull-ups

I’m not sure how many canoe clubs actually have pull-up tests but here is a pull-up training exercise idea for those who haven’t done this before to help increase your pull-up max reps count and overall muscular endurance - great for distance prep - climbing into da canoe.

“Ladder Training” aka Pyramids

Starting at one rep with increments of 1, do as many pull-ups as you can then go back down to one in decrements of 1.

For example, if your max reps is 7:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,6,5,4,3,2,1
(perform 1 rep, rest, perform 2 reps, rest, perform 3 reps, rest etc.)

If doing with a partner, you would alternate at each increment.

For paddling, modify the standard pull-up to finish at chest rather than chin.

Just another training idea ~

Visual Aids: Steersman Training

Perhaps Rambo, the video kahuna, knows? Are there any DVD’s around on outrigger canoe steering.

I’m interested in training some new steersmen, but I’m afraid my personal quirks may get magnified by my students. West’s books are useful, but “a picture is worth a 1,000 words” and surely moving pictures are worth a “1,000,000 words.”

Regatta 2009

This years regatta season is shaping up to be very interesting and fun to watch.

For the second week in a row, it appears the Waikiki Beach Boys have captured the overall points in the Hui Wa’a regatta with the men’s program stepping up.

Outrigger and Hui Lanakila have also been getting strong performances from both the women and men’s program.

With the competition getting tougher throughout, it should make for an awesome build up to the States.

Mahalo nui to both papers for supporting the sport and providing free exposure - please click on the links below to show your interest as well because if not even the paddlers are reading the paddling news articles, the papers will have no reason to write about the sport, potential sponsors will have little interest in sponsoring, and less people outside of paddling will know or understand what the sport is about!

Rack up the visitor counts on these paddling news pages!

Cali Iron Man DQ's

Does anyone know why the boats were DQ’d?

Abandoned Steersman

Just looking at the results from this weekend’s Iron Champs in San Diego and saw that one crew (O’side) was DQ’ed for finishing with only 5 paddlers when they abandoned their steersman after a huli. I want to hear that story. Anyone have any info?

Molokai Time-The Rumors

Time to talk Molokai Men and Women.

I don’t know much about what is happening with the Women. It might be the same as last year. Team Bradley with Hui Lanakila trying hard to take them out.

Australian women coming? Finances will have an influence on the race for teams to travel-men and women

Outlook for the Men’s race

So last year after Molokai, the impression I got was that top Tahitian crews are not coming back for a while. I wonder if that is true. Hiro C maybe can let us know.

Will Lanikai make another push? Answer Of Course. But does Kai B. race with them. I think the Dolan Brothers are gone for Olympic training. So they might be a little slower than last year. Yes I wrote that

It appears Outrigger is still building and will be strong.

In a regatta race Keahou Canoe Club had Bruce Ayau, “Ikaika” Hauanio, “Nate” Hendricks, Seth Koppes, “T” Lussia’a and Andy Penny race sprints. That is solid. Will they remain together or will they split up for team Live Strong and other All-Star teams

Kailua is building as well.

I think they should take the top 9 Team Pueo riders and make a Team Pueo. That would be strong. Danny, Jimmy A., Luke, Kelly, Manny, Tapa, etc.

Will there be an all Hawaiian PAA team again with Manny putting it together?

Any Australian men’s crews going to step up? I know the last time a strong Aussie crew came they took 9th-Team Tiger. They can’t be happy with that. Rambo will know of course

Your thoughts and rumors??

Dragon Boating - Bumper Car Style

My dragon boat team participated in last weekend’s Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver, BC. Here’s a piece our video/camera guy put together of the 2000m Guts & Glory Race.

I hope you guys enjoy!

Pueo Ama

Any comments on how low the ama is in the front? Does it bother anyone?

Dragon Boat Festival and Sunset on the Beach

Dragon Boats in Waikiki at the same time as a big (forecast 5-7’ Hawaiian / 6-12’ face on Saturday) south swell? It would be pretty cool to see one of those things in the surf…

Some Humor-Outrigger Racing Compulsive Habits

We certainly need some humor and levity to this site.

We all have secret obsessive/compulsive racing habits. Most of them are related to preparation some related to racing habits. They are usually secret but would be funny to others if shared. They certainly don’t follow any logical principles.
I will start.

I expect others to follow. Yes I will be ridiculed later at practices and races, but what the hell I am trying to save this site from tense, myopic thinking. I know everyone has them but who will share.

1-before major races, I cut my fingernails and hair short. For some reason, I think I will be faster and cooler during the race and not catch my finger nail on my shorts. This makes no logical sense, because 1 0z of Gatorade weighs more than my hair. I even think about being aero dynamic. I see photos of racers with their slippahs in the bungee cords and I obsess about all of the extra weight slippahs create.

2-before major races, I transport my canoe with its cover. I have a cover, but never really use it for practice or anything- it collects dust in my garage. But for a major race I travel with my OC-1 in a cover. I think the habit is around thinking my canoe cover is like a gun carrying case and that when I unzip the cover it is like I am pulling out a weapon to blow away the competition. My Oc-1 is a weapon of mass destruction. That is logical. It could also be phallic, but I will let others obsess on that

I really don’t have any food or drink obsessions, but I know there are many out there and would love to laugh at others quirky racing compulsive habits.
