The 13th Annual Koahala Coast Challenge was held on Saturday March 1st at Kawaihae. The mild conditions didn't dampen the spirit of the over 160 paddlers who participated in this classic event. There was also a large contingent of junior and paddleboard racers. A big Mahalo to the new sponsors of the event, there was already talk of the 2009 version before the day was over. This day also marked the first time H.I.P.A.'s new electronic race registration and timing system was used in real event. As with any new system, there is a learning curve and bugs.

15-20 mph trade winds, a south east ground swell and a dropping tide going to slack made for pretty good conditions in Kanaka Ikaika's race #3 from Makai Pier to Kaimana Beach. The short course started in Hawaii Kai. It may have been the 3rd race of the season for many of the 163 participants, but it was the coming out party for many of the island's best paddlers making it a very competitive field.
Results of today's HIPA race, the 3rd Annual Hurricane Invitational. Paddlers entered the Alenuihaha Channel at Keokea Bay, and paddled around the northern tip of the Big Island to the finish line at the Old Coast Guard station at Honoipu Landing, 10 miles to the south. Low tide and big surf took its toll on a number of canoes as they negotiated the narrow channel out to sea at Keokea Bay, with rudder-wrecking rocks just under the surface of the water.
