East Hawaii Challenge
The East Hawaii Challenge was held today under drizzly skies in Hilo. The race started at Richardson's Ocean park and finished at Hilo Bayfront where the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Championship race was also being held, which made for a busy day on Hilo Bay.

The Hiko: Lightning
The Hiko is Kia Kaha Canoes & Paddles newest design. We accomplished all of our goals with the design of our new Hiko OC-1 Canoe. Like every canoe manufacturer, we were trying to create a canoe that excels in all conditions. With the Hiko, we believe we did it. We sharpened up the entry, took out a little tail rocker and moved the cockpit forward, resulting in a canoe with effortless acceleration on the bumps and great glide in the flat. Slight changes to the tail of the ama were also made to improve the release.

13th Abbott Galaher SeaMan Race

Results of today's 13th Annual Abbott Galaher SeaMan Race, for OC-1, OC-2, Surfski and Paddleboards, held at Keauhou Bay.
The original 3 and 5 mile courses, billed as I Ke Halawai - I Mua, I Hope, run straight out towards the horizon and back. Today's course was affected by a strong south-bound current as well as choppy seas, the result of yesterday's storm, and the 70 paddlers who braved the course found themselves (as well as the turnaround boats) affected by the conditions.
Carrying a handheld Floating VHF radios vs a cellphone
People sometimes bring up the importance of carrying a cellphone when paddling solo and offshore. I wonder though if a handheld floating VHF radio like this.. http://www.marineproductreviews.com/electronics/icom-m34-floating-handh… would be better suited for us.
