Weather let us down for the first time all season. Even setting the buoys was tricky. Our water official Mary Keilty had to do a rescue of a visitor while setting the finish buoy. Those nasty on-shore winds and head current made for tough slugging. Fortunately, Steinlager helped us nurse our wounds as we “re-hydrated” after the race.

There is nothing quite like sunrise on Maui. Maliko Gulch opened the morning with a blessing of a light shower, which in turn treated us all to a gorgeous rainbow. Sharon’s opening pule honoring Marko really touched all of us. As the last group of paddlers headed to the start line, a scattering of flowers drifted on the current. The spirit present was what we are all about.
