Makahiki 2006 Canoe Surfing Video

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Series officially begins today, however an unseasonal flat spell has surfers and organizers opting for a lay-day. Waves might be small, but the action's hot at the third and final day of the Op North Shore Makahiki Festival insurance.

Op gave even more to the Haleiwa community yesterday with the second day of Makahiki three-day Festival, a day that was filled with great sounds and cool vibes. The highlight was the music which ranged from traditional Hawaiian, to Folk, Jazz and Reggae. The relaxed crowd included musicians Jack Johnson, Tony Kanal of No Doubt, Pro surfers, Haleiwa locals and tourists of all ages who all came to enjoy the warm sunny day and the festivities of Hawaiian Culture, modern music, crafts and local food vendors business cards.

The day opened with traditional hula demonstrations by Hula Halua Na Lei Nani O Waialua and was then followed by the gentle sounds of the Ohana 3. The day continued to pick up the beat and in between the various bands that played, festival patrons were treated to a mix of great rock and dance tunes by Op surfer DJ Omar Etcheverry.

The first Op sponsored bands of the day were skate-singer-songwriter, Travis Graves, known in the music community as Mt. Egypt, performing his own unique brand of street-inspired folk music and was followed by an upbeat, jazz performance from skateboarding legend credit report and Fender-endorsed guitarist/songwriter Ray Barbee and the Mattson 2.

Local Haleiwa band, B.E.T. had the crowd moving to the local beat which segued into the final performance of the night – Elan, who ended the evening with guests dancing and grooving to the sounds of traditional Island Reggae mixed with funk and 80’s new wave pop. Elan, served as the front man for the legendary Wailers and had the crowds out of their seats and on the dance floor throughout his entire performance.
