first paddling video game ever!

Okay, this is not quite 'Karel Jr Pro Paddler' by EA Games, but it's a fun little thing I did this summer. This is some what of a pre-release. Have fun wasting time with it, and post your highest scores! Oh and if it runs slow, well then I guess your computer is a bit slow... Instructions
  • The object of the game is to get as far as you can with 40 strokes.
  • To paddle just click the mouse on the game screen. Each click is one stroke. When the word 'stroking' appears your paddle is in the water, so I don't recommend taking another stroke before that one is finished.
  • If your VO2 (oxygen level) gets over 100% you can't paddle any more, so paddle long and hard and surf all you can.
  • Remember, it doesn't matter how long you take.
  • Conserve your strokes! you will go farther.
  • Click reset to play again.

Some ideas planned for the future include a high score board, ability to fly the ama... adding a paddler on top the canoe. Perhaps different canoes, paddlers, & settings for the waves. Currently the waves are generated in a random position, but are the same height and speed for every game.
Anyway, try it out, let me know what you think.

#8 Fri, 08/08/2003 - 9:39am

oh come on. Don't plow the nose unless you have enough speed to jump the wave..keep it down, when it goes up you slow down real fast. it only takes 1 stroke to catch most waves, connect when you can, and wait for a big one of you come to a stop cause there's no time limit.
eventually I'll let you guys know what I get

#9 Sat, 08/09/2003 - 8:44pm

keep at it guys, Julie from the Big Island emailed me with 682.605! :o

Luke , I got up to 1788, the key is the start, when you click you have to be on a runner and as soon as you fall off that wave there is a small one right after it and it will run to. The big ones plow into the wave in front of you. Keep starting over till you hit one of those runners. Gordo

Are you serious!
This is so cool you guys are playing, I'm gonna have to work on this more. Maybe I might implement some sort of time cut off, cause wow man I never even tried that myself... good job :P

Also guys, please take the time to register at the site. That way we all can keep better track of these top scorers

Totally cool.

You should try removing the limit of 40 on the number of strokes and making the goal to cover a fixed distance in the shortest amount of time. The O2 will do the job of limiting the number of strokes. That would make it more like a real race and the player can try to keep the boat running from one wave to the next, instead of taking one stroke at a time and waiting for big waves.

upto 1276.90, yeah a time limit would be good and maybe a few more strokes, it's over too soon. Woodsy

Yeah, I had been trying to do that, but the 40 stroke limit was a bit easier to implement and I just wanted to get it out. I will definitely try it, there is so much to improve and so much more that could be done! Any way guys, I never thought people you get such high scores, thanks for all the comments. Perhaps I will release some different wave conditions just for more variety.

#29 Mon, 08/11/2003 - 8:34pm

The real reason Keizo made this game was so that he can last through the winter in New York without going crazy from being hundreds of miles from the ocean.. for anyone who doesn't know, keizo just left Kauai today for Renssalear (sp?) Polytechnic (sp?) Institute (i know i spelled this one right) in Troy, New York.. goodluck keizo, thanks for the game.. I've just decided to quit paddling because now I can sit at home on my computer paddle all day without getting sore muscles, and I'll never have to be out of breath struggling to catch that uncatchable wave, now all waves are catchable as long as I click the mouse enough... woohoo now to get my score above 800

This is a really cool game. you are talented to have wrote this. If you are planning on working on it some more that would be really great. I'll keep playing the pre-release for now.

Great game! Only thing is that when I click to start the game, it automatically counts it as 1 stroke. Once in a while I'll get lucky though, and catch a nice ride in the beginning. Did 1104.86 in 2:03.76.

i got 1295 but i think you have to put a time limit so the fastest distance in the shortest amount of time is the goal. but it is a fun game.

i got 1457 and it only took a few minutes. i think the key is to try and keep surfing the same bump. catch it, let it push you, and then wait for it to come through again. by the way, nz/hi is going down this weekend.
