Formed in 1990 by a group of Surf Life Savers from the Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club as a Winter Season training avenue, the Northcliffe Outrigger Canoe Club quickly gained momentum with members joining from around the Gold Coast region from many sports.

The founding club President and driving force behind the new club Mr. John Holmes rallied many of Northcliffe SLSC top athletes and the club quickly established itself as a quality club within the National Outrigger Association (AOCRA) hosting and also winning the National Titles and Champion Club point score in 1996.

Since its formation the club has had many successes within all disciplines of Outrigger Canoe Racing, within the Southern Zone Region, State of Queensland , Nationally along with many members having traveled overseas and raced internationally in Hawaii , USA , NZ, South East Asia and Tahiti .

With strength across all Age Groups in Outrigger Canoe Racing, Northcliffe has been fortunate to have many high profile members represent it in many events.

Names like John Holmes (father of Iron Man Champion – Zane Holmes and Iron Woman Champion – Kirsty Holmes), Bruce and Noel Kolkka (multiple Australian Surf Life Saving Champions), Kirsty Holmes (former World and Australian Surf Life Saving Champion), Nick Crilly (former Australian and current World Single Ski Champion), Steve McBean (runner up in the Coolangatta Gold Endurance Iron Man event twice). The list of champions goes on and on.

A number of members have been fortunate enough to travel to Hawaii and race the famous “Molokai Challenge” with a few even winning their respective divisions. The names of Bruce and Noel Kolkka, Chris Harris and Glen Middlemiss have all obtained success and stood on the winner's dais at Waikiki Beach , OAHU after racing “ MOLOKAI ”, on more than one occasion.

Northcliffe Outrigger Canoe Club has always strived to achieve the best it can every year since its inception and its doors are always open to new members.
