Paint / Gelcoat

Hi,
Due to the troublefree experiences I've had with gelcoated boats in the past, I am very sceptical of the trend towards painted hulls. My experience over the years has been that a well made and cared for gelcoated hull will be, as far as the protective outer shell is concerned, virtually troublefree for the life of the boat. Am I correct in assuming that paint will not be as durable as gelcoat? I am not too positive about the idea of needing to paint or spot paint a hull to maintain the integrity of its finish moisture barrier (paint, gelcoat).
