The first race of the YMCA Kauai Hoe Waa 2009 paddling season got underway this Sunday January 4, 2009, with a total of 61 participants ranging from OC1, OC2, Surf-Ski & Stand Up. Blustery east winds and an outgoing tide made for challenging courses both short (Kukuiula Harbor to Salt Pond) and long (Poipu Beach Park to Salt Pond). Due to the marginal conditions, race director Mark Frazier took extra precautions to review safety measures with all long course participants. Kamuela Aea did the same for the short course paddlers. Three safety vessels were enlisted and many paddlers remarked that they felt well looked after.

Due to the waves that had been kicked up by a strong wind, breaking surf was a big issue as paddlers entered the surf zone to round the last turn buoy before turning in towards shore and into a very strong headwind. Two paddlers were extremely lucky not to have demolished their boats. Tyrus Siale cut the surf a little too close just as a rogue set wave approached from the outside. In a split second he had to decide whether to turn and go with it and possibly get pitched or to try to turn and head back out over it in hopes of punching through it. He decided to head back out and did not make it. The wave took his boat and his leash snapped. Miraculously the boat did not break and blew over towards Gordon Lett who risked his own safety by holding on to Tyrus’ boat right there in the impact zone while Tyrus tried to swim over to him. Seeing his nearly impossible mission, Maika Scott and Laola Aea came up to him on their 2man and had him jump on and the three together paddled him to his boat. Chris Acoba was another paddler who stopped to see if Tyrus needed help. These paddlers showed great sportsmanship and quite possibly dropped a notch or two in the overall race results for taking time to aid a fellow paddler in distress.

Katy Curtis also got pummeled by a huge wave and remarkably did not damage her boat. Unfortunately she got pushed so far inside that she did not round the outside buoy. Several others who did not round the outside buoy were penalized 10 minutes by the officials. The officials remarked that when one person cuts inside a designated turn buoy it starts a chain reaction of others to follow and in the conditions being what they were, it was deemed too dangerous to allow.

Other points of interest:

The “Hard _ss” award goes out to Bob Klosky who completed the race on his Hurricane with NO SEAT!!! He lost it somewhere on the course.

In the closest finish on the women’s long course, Alana Goo-Frazier and Kristen Foster came across the finish line only inches apart. Had Alana not stopped to pick up Maika Scott’s water bottle that fell off during the impact zone fray, the results may have been different.

Visiting Aussie Danny Sheard placed a respectable second on the men’s long course between Mark Frazier first and Butch Keahiolalo third.

Captain Donny Jones braved the entire short course on his open standup board.

Paddlers shared their adventure stories over a great meal provided by Jody DelaCruz while Mark Frazier distributed door prizes. Big Mahalo to the logistics team, which were handled by Butch Keahiolalo, Laola Aea, Mark and Alana Goo-Frazier, Dexter, Dave and Tim on the escorts and super timers Emiko and Storm. See all you guys at the next race, which is scheduled for January 25, registration at kalapaki.
