2009 Garden Island Championships
Are those Bumps and White Caps I see?
The 2009 Ocean Ohana Catalina challenge was a huge success, In these very tough economic times I can thank everyone that made it across the channel, over the pacific, or from other countries to race in the event. I had seriously considered canceling the event fearing too low a turnout for a successful race, The reality was that we had a record number of participant with 130 paddlers making up 46 teams.
Results of the Hurricane Keokea Invitational race held today in North Kohala. Adventures were had launching the canoes through the surf at Keokea Bay, where several canoes were damaged and paddlers were forced to drop out.
Super Aleinuihaha Channel downwind conditions made for fast times for both canoes and Standup paddleboards, who competed on the same 11 mile course. Paddlers from Oahu and Maui joined Hawaii Island Paddlesports members on the exciting ride, and enjoyed the company of whales breaching along the course.
The stiff winds that blew from the west north west on Thursday, Friday and Saturday backed off teasing the paddlers with light breezes from the west south west. This lingering breeze was enough to reverse the racecourse and end at Kalapaki Beach the original start of the race. The long course started at Kukuiula Harbor (12 miles) and the short course started at Waiohai Beach (10 miles).
