Other KILOMETERS Dilemmas: If you put money into knowledge management at Veritoria.

One problem is the necessity to keep the knowledge of retirees. Of course the very fact that the baby boomer bulge is now reaching retirement age is making this problem particularly conspicuous. KM techniques are extremely relevant to this problem. One technique is the use of the lessons learned notion-- create an after action report and only treat the retiree's career as an extended project that is coming to its end, a massive data dump. This idea appears obvious, however only in specific instances is it likely to be very useful.

Preserve them in the CoPs far more inclined to be useful is to keep the retiree involved and findable through expertise locater systems. The real utility is likely to be found not directly in the information that the retiree leaves behind, but in new knowledge created by the interaction of the retiree with current employees.

Looked at in this light, KILOMETER extends into environmental scan and competitive intelligence.

Is KILOMETERS here to remain ?
The response certainly seems to be yes. The most convincing evaluation is the bibliometric one, comparing that to other business enthusiasms and simply counting the amount of articles in the company literature. Most business enthusiasms grow quickly and reach a peak after about five years, and then decrease almost as quickly as they grew.
