Hawaiki Nui Va’a 2009

Hiro and other Tahitians,

Talk should be starting up about this race and favorites. What are they saying in Tahiti? EDT, Shell Va'a or others

If you had to bet money on the race, who would you pick?

Any new OC-6 canoe designs to be brought out for this race?

Submitted by Kona J on Sun, 10/25/2009 - 6:20am

Shell's favorite, how could it be otherwise ?
I would bet on Matairea Hoe. They have a "new" canoe that comes from BoraBora. Look at last year's pics, it made by the same guy who built BoraBoraVaa's V6. They've been ceossing the channel between Huahine and Raiatea a few times and their times were .. I won't tell, they don't want to... hehehe

Put your house on canoe #354 for the big upset win.
Kona J Excuse me I replied to the post and then read that it was addressed to Tahitians, which I of course am not, (but I wish I lived there)

k

Ia orana. mauruuru e hoa ma. Hey Hiro and Tahitian699 - how often do change canoes? When I was a Ruahutu they said they had a v6 for all kinds of conditions (obviously the flat lagoon boat for really flat) but they said they had mid and large volume v6... but i didnt know if they were joking?

Must cost a lot to buy new canoes every race!! Aue!

#4 Sun, 10/25/2009 - 8:13pm

I would bet on OPT

I hope Team Hawai'i gets a good canoe to race in this year.

This article comes from last years Hawaiki Nui Race
http://tinyurl.com/ykkthhs

...
Far behind were the five overseas teams in this year's race. Kamanu Hawaii was in 60th place, Team Hawaii was in 65th place, Fréjus of France was in 75th place, Waitakere of New Zealand was in 77th place and Italy was in 80th place.
...

team hawaii alway have a got va'a, last year they were on the same va'a they make a better place the year before.
Jim know to choose the good va'a.
This years team primo have the shell va'a won last year "2008".

Teams that make good results may have canoes for free. The canoe builder act like a sponsor. That's how Matairea got their canoe. The builder hopes they will do well and that this will translate in orders from other club who wants to buy a good canoe...
My team doesn't have a good V6, we don't even have enough money to buy one, so we have to rent a V6 from another club for the race...

Looking for links to the race and results. Can't find it on vaa tahiti. It was on radio last year. Hiro is racing so he might not be available to help us.

#13 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 8:43am

not yet...I am listening to Tahitian online radio (RFO), but no particular info yet...

http://radio.rfo.fr/?page=accueil&radio=5

I will keep you posted

#14 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 8:49am

#20 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:15am

Team Fischermichel (from Germany) is far behind but not last!

#21 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:38am

it is the first time that the team Fischermichel (Germany) paddels on the open sea, they usually paddle on a lac in Bavaria...commentator welcomes them!

The radio speaker says that Team Brazil is also somewhere behind and that they probably play better soccer than paddling, but also welcomes them to the race and honours the long way they made to come to the race.

Shell still in front...has comfortable advance

#22 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:40am

David Tepava is steering Shell (they are taking direct course to Raiatea)

Matairea (with Manutea Owen) are taking a North course...

OPT B comes back to join the top teams

#23 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:36am

Former Team Coach of OPT says that the cap of Manutea (from Matairea Ho'e) is the best one...we'll see.

#24 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:41am

is someone online??? Or am I maybe writing to myself? :-)

#25 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:42am

There are 90 people on line. I imagine you are writing to 50 people. Shell is so good, but I always want unknown surprise team to win and feel the glory. We will see. I know many team in Tahiti are trained hard to take down Shell.

#26 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:48am

You are never alone out there in cyberspace. :-))

#27 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:48am

great, thank you for the info :-)

...I guess that the Tahitian radio station RFO is the only source of information...to the extent they speak French I will keep you posted...however, they also tend to comment in Tahitian, in which case I only understand "Shell"..."OPT"... "Matairea" etc. :-)

#28 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:52am

now they speak about selling official Hawaiki Nui t-shirts...very interesting...

#29 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 9:57am

Any idea how far ahead Shell is?

#30 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:01am

last thing I heard is they they have a relatively comfortable advance. However, as the some teams took a different directions/caps, in particular Matairea Ho'e taking the North cap, it is difficult to tell exactly how far Shell is ahead...

#31 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:05am

  1. Shell (no suspense 400 m in front)
  2. EDT
  3. OPT (500-600m behind Shell)
  4. Matairea Ho'e (very far North)
  5. 6-8. Bora Bora, Hawaii

#32 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:11am

Shell goes huti faariii...68-70 strokes per minute

EDT has problems to follow this rythm

#33 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:12am

#39 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:30am

It reminds me of the 2007 edition when Rene Avepi with his team Vairao took a complete different course than the others....and suddently they finished third...no one expected it

#40 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:32am

k

10:21am - finish in about 10:30

Hawaii 3rd?!

#41 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:33am

k

#46 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:36am

looks like Manutea is doing like Vairao three years ago...against the current but with the waves...

#47 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:36am

k

#54 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:45am

OPT changed race course/cap

#55 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:46am

Hawaii 3rd. Is that true? That is probably better than many suspected. What were the conditions?

#56 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:46am

Any word on how the lady's of Team Hawaii did or are doing?

#57 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:48am

k

From Tahitian

Shell

OPT changing course

Matairea sticking to long north course

Very hot out there and a hot race

#58 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:48am

I think 2-2.5 m swell - good surf, good for Hawaii and Matairea :)

#59 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:48am

Got it not done yet. I imagine that all of the paddlers are getting to the pretty well done feeling. Many changes in last 30 minutes

#60 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:49am

Shell far ahead - great surf from behind (50cm swell)

#61 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:49am

2- EDT Va'a (500m behind Shell)
3- OPT far behind (600-1k) behind Shell

#62 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:51am

Mahalo plenty Oronui in your efforts for us to read what is happening there in Tahiti.

Who are the " Team Hawaii " women?

#63 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:52am

1-Shell Va'a (with among others: Yoann Cronsteadt, David Tepava, Taaroa Dubois)
2- EDT Va’a (500m behind Shell)
3- OPT far behind (600-1k) behind Shell

#64 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:52am

k

whats the distances he is talking about in French? From Tahitian...
* The games are over
* Shell in front.
* OPT are three 'thing's behind
* Shell caught everyone sleeping, they way in front

This fulla keeps on talking about how mean Shell is.Shell to the top. He doesn't think OPT can catch.

OPT Cronstead wont catch Taaroa, Bruno Tauhiro, Roland, Yoaan Constread, Tepava in Shell.

#65 Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:53am

A 1KM de la passe, classement:
