Maui Thanksgiving Day Paddle for the Hungry

I just wanted to congratulate all the Maui folks for coming out on Thanksgiving and showing support for the Maui Food Bank. The beach at Kamaole 1 was colored with all types of watercraft from OC1 &2 to SUP and Prone paddlers, surfskis, OC6, even a couple of swimmers. The best part was hearing Peter announce the food donation amount estimated to be around 2000 pounds. Way to go Maui paddlers and water enthusiasts! Maui No Ka Oi!

Paddle for the Hungry was a big success. We raised about 2000 lbs of food and also gathered about $500 in monetary donations for the Maui Food Bank. There were about 200 entries, by far the most entries ever for this event. There were 12-man, 6-man, 4-man 2-man, one-man and v-1 canoes, surfskis, banana boat kayaks, SUP’s, paddle boarders and even swimmers participating in the event.

As for the race itself it was alright. The amount of people that showed up for the race about doubled the amount from last year. That caught us by surprise. We were not really prepared for that amount. But we got through it with some minor difficulties. For instance, our timers were not ready in time to get finish times (That is what happens sometimes with a free event) and the wind picked up pretty early so there was some head wind at the end. But everyone was accounted for and safe, so that was the main thing.

The Maui Food Bank was totally stoked and unprepared as well. They had underestimated the amount of food they were to pick up. They were pleasantly surprised though. A lot of the food donated was distributed right back out that day, so that was really gratifying to hear.
