Na Wahine O Ke Kai (the women of the ocean) is a race that is held every year since 1979 by women paddlers. The crossing is considered a right of passage for novice paddlers as they take on one of the toughest channels in the ocean while competing with elite paddlers. On this day, a group of women from Kihei Canoe Club and Wailea Canoe Club (both on Maui) join to make the crossing together. What makes them unique? They are all 1st or 2nd year paddlers, all novice including steerswomen.
