The 2010 Doctor Video

Ok, no outriggers in sight, but ..........a good paddling video is a good paddling right?? (gee i'm humble ...hahaha)

Enjoy some fantastic paddling introduced by 9 time Molokai Ski Champion Dean Gardiner.

Well i lied ... there was one outrigger ... James Shortis from Hong Kong on a Zephyr.

Dean Gardiner chasing bumps in super slowmo is the highlite of this video, the music ain't half bad either and you get some background on the City that stole the Americas Cup ... remember that, Bond, his name was Bond ... then he got into strife and disappeared for a while.... but we had the Cup.

Rambo, too bad when you have to answer your own posts ... :)< :).

Don't worry, we are watching your video on your site - this one ranks meanwhile second on my favorite list.

#2 Sun, 01/24/2010 - 10:01pm

Regarding the America's Cup? I thought the Aussies just flew away with it using a wing.............keel!

#3 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 12:18am

I think Rambo's point was we did take it from the Yanks and they didn't like it!!!!!!!! Haha.

Not many outrigger canoes in Western Australia but the numbers are building. It would be a buzz to tag along the do this race when they are in a position to offer canoes for fly ins....

Unlike Eckhart I think that is your best yet Cecil, now about that second cameraman position you have vacant.......................!@#$%^^

#4 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 12:36am

Koa, said -- Regarding the America’s Cup? I thought the Aussies just flew away with it using a wing………….keel!

Yeah we did .. now they all have them.

Clarkie, Eckhart applied for the B camera job months ago.... as usual cobber .... you missed the boat.

Amazing video, Rambo!

#6 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:27am

too bad you're not in hawai'i, rambo.

i think i could give you some work.

#7 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 9:11am

Another awesome one Rambo .... Dang man, better and better.

I like that sequence around 9.27 where Dean cuts back, seemingly stops and then just takes off, no paddle drop in style.

Thanks for putting this stuff up.

Another great video Rambo - the intro was excellent!

#9 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 1:09pm

Don't tempt me jc, .... i don't need an excuse to go to Hawaii (except for the wife)
How did your video technique sessions go?

Thanks Jim

Pog, as you know these guys are great athletes and have amazing ocean knowledge just like Karel, Kai etc on OC1, so i post these ski videos so we can all learn from them. And i can tell you videoing these guy's up close doing their thing is an awesome privilege, I'm stoked. The fact they don't have an Ama makes no difference to me. Of course they are a different culture/outlook to OC, but the skills are the same, and so is their love for the ocean.

Cheers Rambo

Clarkie,
Rambo has me clean the garage, mow the lawn, do dishes etc. I am not ripe to touch his equipment yet, he says. He let me look at his camera once already though.

There are three number one videos now:

Clint Robinson - most dynamic
Tim Jacobs, Fenn Cup - best technique
Dawid Mocke - best downwind surfing

Now we need to mix these into a 30 min clip that I may get motivated to get on my stationary bike:

4:30 Rambo-video - 30 sec K1 500m Olympics - repeat 6 times with different segments.
Then you can bike at moderate load during the Rambo sections and go all out during the 500 m sprints.

Do this interval training three times a week. It has been shown to be as effective as 5 times/week 2 hour
moderate to higher intensity road biking training - very effective.

#11 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 7:28pm

What do you think about this analogy between paddling and swimming:

OC 1 is like breast stroke
Surfski is like freestyle

#12 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 7:24pm

Na I think OC is more like free style cause we can cruse and Surfski is like butter fly cause when its done right it looks sweet.

Rambo you are amazing I just got off the water an hour ago after two hours of paddling and now I'm all amped up to go back out. love hate right now cause its dark.

#13 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 7:53pm

TPop, it might be dark outside but feel for this poor chappy after watching the video............

..............he emailed me and said he was so inspired by the paddlers powering up and chasing runs he grabbed his paddle ran outside and the water was frozen soild. .... hahahah so funny.

#14 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:20pm

Geez that's a bit harsh Ecky, Mocke is 20 years younger than Gardiner, i recon Deano had the better surfing technique and he didn't have to put the paddle in the water to pull on it. The zig zag maneuver after the slow-mo was awesome smart.

Only Mrs Rambo is permitted touch my "equipment" !!!!

#15 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:28pm

amazingly it isn't an upwind race. bet they have great food too.

lol

#16 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:51pm

Almost was, they had to reverse it the day before. Normally the race is Rottnest to Mainland Downwind. This was the race Karel did last year on the Zephyr when he was crook.

The smorgasbord after the race that nite was superb jc

Cheers Rambo

#17 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 12:40am

I have no clue if Dawid Mocke is the best surfer or not - in this video it looks as if he does it real well.
What are his strengths, Rambo ?
I couldn't see much from watching Gardiner, will have to look again.

Surfski = freestyle because of the continuous motion and the glide. Butterfly feels very different.
OC 1 = motion less fluent, to me more like breast stroke; not quite though.

What do you mean by OC 1 can cruise, Tpop ?

#18 Mon, 01/25/2010 - 11:02pm

Eckhart, in Australia you can get into alot of trouble offering to handle another guys equipment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But then again, you never know,,,,,,haha.

#19 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 12:29am

At the point in the video after the Gardiner slowmo, i could see Dawid and Cotter from the media boat with Gardiner catching up pretty quickly. The ocean started to jack up on the shallow seabeds and Deano took off. There is obviously a lot of video missing between the different stages so hard to judge from the actual video online, being there seeing it all, you get a better perspective.

Dawid Mocke is an awesome paddler, made a few small race line errors in some of his past races, but nothing much separates the top guys just like in Oc. If every thing goes right on the day, anyone of them can win eh.

I thought you had an early start in the morning Clarkie .... can't help yourself can you?,,, just one more post before bed.

#21 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 12:43am

Good to know, Clarkie, but if you desperately need a job as B camera man, you may have to touch the equipment as part of the job - so be prepared.

#22 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 9:29am

Ah! Come on paddlers? Those were baby kine Kalama Beach waves on a strong S. Easterly day. Deano wasn't even trying. All you had to do was dip your paddle in the water and you took off. Anyone, even on a Scupper, would look good lilly dipping along. Those Aussies and S. Africans must be laughing at us for being impressed with such easy stuff. Too bad though; that Rambo wasn't around, with his HD camcorder; to video Deano in his prime milking the really big and steep stuff. For my money, I would bet Greg Long, in his Pueo, would have finished in the top 5 in this baby chop?

#23 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 9:36am

The beginning of this video is absolutely fantastic, the combination of music and Google earth is almost mysterious. I feel like I am about to see some crazy shit, like 20 ft seas, or maybe some paddlers killing a whale half way there.

Rambo, when are you going to come to Hawai`i and film a makai pier run on a nuts day? Now that I would pay to see.

#24 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 9:45am

very true

The Ka'iwi channels been pretty tame the last couple of crossings, considering how big it can get, its only a matter of when it will happen, now that would be a nuts Imax 3D worth payin to watch - mo bettah than watchin blue ppl in Avatar imho! Even just being on the escort, having to turn around to pick up da paddler(s) and seeing monster swells coming at you would be an excitement to see.

#25 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 9:53am

Rambo,

The other stuff I like is the side by side shots with different boats on the same waves ... like at 5:43 or especially 6:55. One can really see how different designs react....... you seein' this Eckhart ?

aloha,pog

#26 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 10:01am

Right-toe Onno: interesting watching the Think and Fenn side by side in the same water. The Fenn' s nose is riding above the water (less resistance), while the Think's is buried and pushing water and unable to ride the bow wave. Perhaps more volume in the nose or upswept bow like the Pueo might help for the Think? Also, from the video, I learned how to do a jump start with these deep cockpit boats. Much more different than doing a jump start on a high cockpit Surf Lifesaver ski.

#27 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 10:16am

There has not been many races at all this last few years anywhere in the world with great conditions so maybe things are about to change, i hope so. Believe me, I'm doing all i can to get the opportunity to shoot races in Hawaii, i have expressed my interest to the right people, but understandably most of the budget must go into putting on a good race first, video is a bonus, though i do believe it will help with sponsor exposure and promotion of the sport, else i wouldn't be doing it.

Yes onno the there has been contact from the ski manufacturers wanting footage of their skis for analysis and also discussion between the paddlers. Actually Nuno André Santos, from NELO (the famous K1 Manufacturer) contacted me yesterday about footage of his new NELO ocean surf ski that Jacob Clear (Aussie K1 Olympian) raced to a win last weekend in the King Of the Coast race here in Qld. So yeah, the smooth slowmo and side by side shots are interesting for analysis. I'm sure most manufacturers know this and have done so already in developing their product, maybe not side by side with other brands though in race conditions.

Cheers Rambo

#28 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 12:03pm

Hey! Rambo and Clarkie, Happy Australia Day!!!!! Yes, I know it was yesterday, but for us, it's today.

About that Nelo ski, which category is it in, Surf Lifesaver or Long distance?

#29 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 1:11pm

Thank you for yesterday Koa., according to their website it is being certified to Australian surf competition standards. Not sure if that means SLSA standards for use in competitions or just a general certification. Ocean Racing skis are unlimited so no specs that i know of. Maybe they have another ski in mind?

Just looked further and they do indeed have 2 skis, Ocean Ski and Surf Ski, so the Surfski is being certified.

Rambo

#30 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 1:35pm

Who cares about the conditions - every condition requires skill.

Onno, did they narrow the entry of the Think too much ?

Rambo, are you about to film some Surf Lifesaver events - there are, only a few, videos online, and I think that those guys are spectacular athletes.

#31 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 7:53pm

I've pitched the quick web based product to SLSA for some of the smaller events as Nat TV Ch7 has exclusive media rights for the current Kellogg s Nutrigrain Series and no one else allowed on the beach, but two of the Series are in my home town so i will be hiding in the sand dunes ...hahaha

I am setting up another line of work that hopefully will pay the bills and allow me to chase my passion for shooting Ocean Sports more and that is multiCam views of Big Game Fishing expeditions for well heeled clients that want HQ video of them catch, tag and releasing Marlin, Swordfish etc..Some underwater cams, POV Cams, even one mounted on the line in front of the live bait on the hook. I'm hooking up with a guy in the game that specializes in hosting celebrities when they visit OZ like Metalica, Olson Twins, Cold-play and top touring sports people that Charter him for a day or two as well as trips up to a week. This will be exciting and very interesting. Much of the footage will remain private, but you never know.

Ya gotta love this shot eh.

#34 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 9:03pm

Rambo
The Olson twins!!!
They are never going to go big game fishing what are you on about .
While the Doctor video is a good effort, I feel that you are forgetting the fundamentals,
eg where is the question mark after "who wants it"
Its a bit "lightweight" on details if you ask me.
And stay out of those sandhills with your cameras.

#35 Tue, 01/26/2010 - 9:05pm

Yep that's the Series.from 2008-2009 Ecky.

2010 the current series video is not on the web.

Kevy the Olson Twins were a past Client and loved it, they apparently caught huge fish.

I made even a bigger blue in the Doctor video Kevy, i forgot to video the women and Lauren Bartlett won. I got into trouble for that.

You are my harshest critic but i luv you ... now pop back in MY studio and get back to designing those kitchens ....

Gee it has a very square nose Cecil, it's got weed catcher written all over it. Just a river rat talking!!!!!

#39 Wed, 01/27/2010 - 12:21am

No weed in the Mooloolaba .... unless someone's been playin' rasta music all nite and fell in the river..

Cec

#40 Wed, 01/27/2010 - 2:48am

haha, weeds. Oh rambo that trailer shot is mean.

#41 Wed, 01/27/2010 - 10:33am

Mahalo Eckhart for the Kellogs video, for I really enjoyed watching the "Ironwomen Bikini Shoot."

Hint: Rambo, yes you blew it for not shooting the women. But you'll be forgiven when you do start to include footage of those bikini "Ironwomen" in the future. They're just gorgeous. Watch out though, when they got their game face on, for they can kick butt, as they have demonstrated doing the Uncle Toby's and the King's Races here years ago.

#42 Wed, 01/27/2010 - 8:43pm

You could always watch reruns of "Baywatch" Koa, .... obviously not for the "Hoff"

Ramboscie

#43 Wed, 01/27/2010 - 9:31pm

This is what sponsorship does - Rambo is not allowed on the beach; we don't get to see the Ironwomen.

How about keeping money out of sports ?

#44 Wed, 01/27/2010 - 10:33pm

I would like to throw an idea out there that removes the requirement for race organizers to budget for media coverage and allows viewers to download a high def copy of races and events for a very small download fee.

The race organizer get's free race video coverage and thus promotion, the viewer receives an unbiased HD video report shot by a freelancer who understands what paddlers and ocean sport fanatics want to see on a user pays basis, rather than a once only free low quality internet playback.

What i'm suggesting is this ........... would you pay say $2 to download a 20-30 min totally unbiased HD video to keep and replay as many times as you want?

Love to hear your thoughts guys.

Cheers Rambo

BTW the download would also include an ipod/iphone/small media player compatible version.

#45 Fri, 01/29/2010 - 4:18pm

yes. i paid for a copy of super aito 2009 and watch it daily, so there's no reason i wouldn't buy an electronic copy.

#46 Fri, 01/29/2010 - 2:04pm

Yep, I would fork out $2 debited from my paypal account for a HD Download that I could then burn to a DVD for the big screen at home. Sounds like a great idea!!!!!!
