the first three to finish ,Steeve Teihotaata,Clovis Trope and Terearii Hamblin, were penalized 15 minutes for failing to be on the beach at the start of the race.A total of 73 were thus penalized, out of 537 paddlers. These paddlers were in their va'a at the start, when the rules specify that they must be on the beach.Terearii Hamblin was also barred for life to participate in a Te Aito, because of his conduct afterwards.

Hey kava, do you know anymore about what happened at the start (and end for the guy who was barred for life)? Even with the penalty, Steeve Teihotaata must have had an awesome weekend. Can't wait for the Super Aito this year!

here's another link to full results run through google translator. It shows all 454 finishers. and about three pages of people who had DNF's or didn't show up. those kinds of numbers are insane.

here's the people with the penalty. that penalty will keep a lot of guys from qualifying for Super Aito! Including Lewis Laughlin... wow.

so at 28km or 17.4 miles. The fastest time before penalty was 2h 24m 20s. About 8m20s miles in boat wake and slop with no rudder... i think.

what I read in TahitiPresse is that the officials decided to enforce the rules, too many guys were cheating by being already in their va'a at the start, instead of on the beach, having to make a dash and jump in the va'a, in the manner of a 24 hours LeMans Formula 1 race, which is how it's supposed to be done.they had Mormon church members ,chosen for impartiality, record who cheated. As for Terearii Hamblin,I gather he got physical and verbally abusive in a confrontation with race officials, who will decide next week whether to banish him for life,or...

"race officials, who will decide next week whether to banish him for life,or…"

....be made to paddle on his knees without a paddle for a few years, maybe.
