Yay! I applaud you guys for what you are doing. All the major news outlets only show us snipets of our state sport. oc16 shows a lot of cool stuff, but if you have dish you'll never see it. Good Luck today to all the Wahine racing and good luck to all the folks at ocpaddler tv for attempting to do what nobody else will do.

Congratulations to everyone. It had to be hot and hard out there. We did a Makapu'u run this morning that must've been the single worst Makapu'u run of my life.... I can't imagine how the channel must've felt.

On another note, I want to say how crazy awesome that webcast was. That really is a huge thing for the sport. At any given time there were over 500 people watching. I'm sure that it is just going to get better and better. Huge props to Oceanpaddler for putting that together.

It's an exciting time for outrigger canoe paddling.

Mahalo for everyone who tuned in today! It wasn't an easy task to attempt the live coverage accross the Kaiawi today. In fact, the server, www.ustream.tv went down for 1 hour ... just past Kokohead. I hope everyone enjoyed what we were able to broadcast - in total 29,000 viewers tuned in to watch today.

It can only get better from here - Aloha from Alex and the entire 15 people crew who worked on the webcast today - also many mahalos to all the officials at the Na Wahine for 'pushing and enabling' us to do this!

Molokai Hoe is coming up 10/10 - and we will have more cameras for that....

Wow!!! It was pretty neat watching the Na Wahine live from my laptop on the dining room table. It was great while it lasted. I think I'll stream the next Molokai Hoe to the big screen in the livingroom. For us makule paddlers, it is the only way for paddle the Channel now a days. Hopefully, all the experts can critique the race and give us their analysis of it. My observation of the race, while viewable, showed TB had better changes than WBB. I'm sure there were other things that TB did to win it in the last 6 miles which the experts could clue us in on? Also, just what were the contributing factors that led to WBB losing its lead. Please, don't get me wrong, for it was an exciting race watching the canoes dice it out, I just want to know what the race experts saw and observed?

I have to say I had a lot of fun watching the web cast and reading the running commentary from all the viewers. The whole thing was actually working very well until apparently the Ustream server crashed. Honestly I turned it on thinking I'd just watch the start and see how it goes. 4 hours later I got to watch Beach Boys and Team Bradley battle it out right in front of me. It was amazing to see that battle go down live! The suspense when crews were doing changes, catching bumps, and racing side by side was insane. This really could be a huge part of the future of our sport. I can't even imagine how thrilling it will be to watch Shell, OPT, Primo, and others blasting across that channel. I was watching the little "hit" counter at the bottom of the screen and there were something like 20,000 hits. At any given time there were 200 to 400 people actually watching the stream. I can't imagine there aren't companies who would like that kind of exposure on people's computers all over the world...

Kudos to Ocean Paddler TV. Let's hope Ustream gets their crap together or you guys find a better server. I would have loved to see the lead crews cross maunalua bay and round diamond head. If I were to make one recommendation, Ocean Paddler TV should figure out a way to have something playing while swapping between cameras or signals dips out, whether it be ads, video clips, music... anything is better than a little black box silently sitting there.

hawaiianX - will it be shown on tv? is it available anywhere on the web for viewing at any time? i was on the escort boat coaching a crew across and never got to see any of it - although i did get to see the helicopter in action! it was exciting to see it flying sideways so low to the water and how you'd stop to focus on crews making changes. although i didn't get to see your work, great job! :)

Well done to everyone involved in the broadcast of the race. It was awsome to actually see the race unfold (crashing servers notwithstanding). May I suggest an on screen update of the leaders for the men's race. Doesn't have to be fancy - just a whitboard displaying the top 6 or 10 crews that a camera could pan to occasionally would be fantastic. Cheers.

#13 Mon, 09/27/2010 - 4:24pm

I love live webcast.

#14 Mon, 09/27/2010 - 4:57pm

i'll add one more thing. i was just talking to novice c about it today. why not have GPS tracking like the Epic Solo? I'm sure others have brought it up before but it bears mentioning again. Maybe for the top 20 crews or so. It seems you could embed the live video stream on one side of the screen with the GPS tracking displayed right next to it. That way you have a constant update of where the top crews are relative to each other. You could see course. And you would actually know where the boats are instead of them just being out there "somewhere". There would be something else to watch besides the black screen...

Any links to photos??

#16 Tue, 09/28/2010 - 5:22am

jc9_0, I like your idea for us viewing the race...........how would this sit for hardedened Molokaii racers?........dare I say it, a support boat crew could be viewing the live stream and gleen some pretty useful info about the competition.....In your opinion and experience, does this add or detract from this great race?

#17 Tue, 09/28/2010 - 11:44am

Mahalo everyone for the cudos and suggestions. That was not an easy task at all. Even getting a phone signal in that channel is at times diffucult. With that being said, we learned alot, and Alex, our EP and fearless leader has doubled the production for the men's race. The expense in doing a live web-cast across a channel is huge, so remember us when you need to advertise:):)

We sure do appreciate all your support and I hope we make you proud to paddle. Our goal has always been to do the pono thing for our sports and more importantly our viewers.

Terry

PS: See you all on the chat, I am skywave, the crazy nut case on there who nearly had a stroke when ustream crashed during the womens race...Myself along with our tech team were in the studio and it was not pretty..Alex was filming from the chopper and some how was able to text us with updates..Crazy fun day!!

#18 Sun, 10/03/2010 - 6:45pm

Thank you EVERYONE for bearing with us during the live webcast of the Na Wahine. JC9_0 - thank you for all the positive comments and the suggestion with the GPS. Hopefully Garmin will look at the numbers of people watching live and step up to sponsor that part of the coverage.

For the live webcast of the Molokai Hoe we have switched streaming providers - BIG cudos to livestream.com ! they are supporting our efforts and giving us a $3,000 service for free! We will have 4 cameras live and a team of broadcast veterans behind the scenes... A total of more than 30 people working on the live webcast - Stay tuned - pass it on - we think this will be huge.

Aloha,

Alex
