Molokai Hoe steersman clinic?

I inquired on the general board without success.

Is anyone aware of anyone holding a pre-Molokai Hoe steersman clinic that focuses on 2010 Molokia Hoe's challenges exclusively, I heard there was a clinic on Maui some years back, but can't seem to get a line on a clinic.

I've never heard of a public clinic for the channel. Most clubs gather up thier rookies and go over Tides, currents, north -vs- south course etc...

Poke left to go left, poke right to go right. There, you owe me 50 bucks for the clinic.

Yankee,

I think you are on the East Coast. Contact Fuzerider-Eric. He knows everything about paddling and Hawaii.

You guys should be able to hook up.

Maybe video tape it and post.

funny a$$ comments. I've seen steering clinic's at sand island but not specific " molokai hoe " clinics. The channel is almost always different in terms of conditions thus how to teach that? Sure, there iscertain conditions where one would steer the high road or up into the channel but no exp. steersman would give you all his tricks. Ask ur club's elder steersman for advice. Or try follow Nappy across the channel!!!!

Which is to say, as usual, if you don't know anything and haven't a clue, around here you can still offer a dismissive opinion in place of anything resembling an actual answer.

If you actually know of a pre-Molokai clinic let me know off-line (otherwise you might impede the flow, and wealth, of true wisdom here).

Such a clinic was offered in Maui in '07.

poopoo is right. if you want to know go ask. there are tons of great steersmen, or maybe even just plain ordinary good steersmen that would be willing to tell you all they know. In the end its up to you to gather a crew thats willing to put in the effort of hitting the outside for the training. to get better in the rough, practice in the rough. knowledge should be free.

and almost forgot. the best way to improve your steering is to make sure the guys in the crew are putting out. the crew can really be a huge asset. if they dont give you hull speed it makes for a long day. however you need to return the favor and give them the rides and reassurance.

Hi everyone! I like to be a know-it-all here on ocpaddler, and really let people know what's up, because seriously, I know A LOT of stuff. Sometimes the amount of stuff and things that I know even impresses me! So anyways, can you all do me a favor and research something for me? Yes, I'm going to ask AGAIN, because none of you people were willing to do my legwork for me the last time I posted. Also, this is MY thread, so I would like you to know that I'm going to regulate whatever you post on here.
Thanks a$$holes.

Oh BTW Yankee, did you send the check yet? I haven't received it yet.

since we have OC PADDLER SYNDICATES here. heres my own humble opinion.
each year the channel is diff. tides, current, wind,crew........
before each race i choose to drive up on the escort to kind of get an idea as to what is going on with those fore-mentionioned things. I dont recomend for everyone. the hard part is to choose the right line. all have strengths and weaknesses. its also hard to make a decision and stick to it. advice- hire a good captain who can tell you what others are doing, tell you where you are, and what changes would be best if any at all. when it comes to steering, make the boat as light as possible. if you know that you arent going to get a bump, quarter it and try to slide down the next. theres nothing more that a crew hates than a nose thats straight in the air with a captain tell them to power down a monster bump thats nearly impossible to catch. pick the small runners that will help you build the speed. LET THE BIG ONES GO. alot of times the boat might seem out of control when actually thats in a sense what you want. alot quartering and if your lucky a few waves to ride. a weaker crew may have to take a little more southerly course. dont ask why but it just feels like it takes more gorillas to take the extreme north route.Big rule; make #5 one of your smartest most energetic paddlers. a good five is the best asset any steersperson could have. they are the one that will get you over bumps. a small poke often is way better than someone who thinks they can paddle just to make a big correction later. thats all for now. sorry bad at typing

whoa. Yankee, you just found your guy. and all his knowledge was free! no paid clinic needed. i like the info Keola_24...

in case you are wondering Yankee, Keola_24 is legit! he won't brag to you on here about it, but was a top 10 channel steersman last year. i also echo Keola_24's thoughts on knowledge. It really should be free. another reason why free keiki and novice paddling clinics are great sources of info. unfortunately in your case Yankee you are at a disadvantage being on the east coast. perhaps a move to Hawai'i would be in the prescription for better steerering.

Everything Keola 24 said is true. One more thing to remember is that everyone makes steering mistakes crossing the channel. It is how quickly you can recover from your mistakes that makes a big difference in the outcome. You really want to avoid making the same mistake for six hours. My 2 cents.

Well, there you have it YankeeHookele - a fully-endorsed Channel steering clinic from a top steersman, and you didn't even have to go to Maui.
