Just for the art of mindgame :
Anyone ever thought of a design involving one iato instead of two ?
Could be interesting in order to clear the front, and play with ama balance fore and aft the main hull.
Don't know any structural resistance involved here, don't blame me I'm not a designer nor a builder !

with respect. The Huki has a wing for surf ski that could do a simalar thing.

mulus is correct ... Jude calls them a Gull Wing. And Huki has made what they call a one-person dragonboat, that looks like a surfski with the Gull Wing built in and paddled with single blade. You can see it at www.huki.com
But, the Gull Wing might be more like sponsons on both sides of the rather than an ama with one iako.

A one side "huki gull wing", maybe a bit farther from hull centerline, a bit longer to provide enough buoyancy, but definitely sharing the concept, position and aesthetics was what I had in mind.

I've seen a canoe where both iako are mounted behind the paddler about 6" apart. It didn't work too good because the forces hitting the front of the ama would cause the whole rig to torque and twist. Seems like there wasn't enough separation between the iako. So if you tried to do something like have a single iako I'd think the thing would have to be pretty damn beefy. Maybe a hollow moulded beam of some sort? Then maybe you'd run into weight issues...

when i was in 18's we actually had a time trial in surfski's with canoe paddles, it was pretty nuts
