OC-6 Sailing Canoe Rig Approx. Cost?

Aloha,

If someone had a good hull to use for a sailing canoe, what would the approx. cost for a complete sailing canoe rig be?

Ama, Iako, Sails, etc.

Can you use a regular spray skirt? I am guessing not?

Mahalo,

Good question. I've been wondering the same thing. And does anybody sell kits to convert a "normal" Mirage or Bradley into a sailing canoe?

Around here in New England, from time to time especially in dinghy racing, you'll hear about a "smugglers' race where competitors can use both musclepower and sail to complete the course.

OC-6's are getting progressively more specialized. Before I attempted to adapt an OC-6 for sail, I'd take a look at a holopuni. http://www.holopunicanoes.com/

A trimaran configuration is far easier to handle under sail and I think a holopuni would be ideal for smuggler's races. Down in Florida there's a racing association called the "Water Tribe" that thrives on combining sail and paddle long distance races. http://www.watertribe.com/

If you have your heart set on sailing an outrigger configuration, I seem to recall the Duke OC-4 allowed that option. Remember outriggers are always assymetrical and the faster they move the greater possibility for a huli.

Hi Guys, My husband Nakoa builds complete sailing canoes and all the rigs, IE: amas, iakos, standing rigs. You can contact him at nakoa@oceanpaddler.tv..There are no kits, each canoe has to be custom fit.
The Holopuni is NOT a 6 man Hawaiian sailing canoe. You can-not look at that with the idea of how to convert a paddling 6 man. Most all of our hulls in the Hawaiian sailing canoe assoc are converted paddling canoes. I dont know of any that race that arent. Check out the web-site www.hsca.biz for photos and what we require in order to sail with us..

Hope this helps
Terry

A couple more things, JJ, the spray covers we use here are a little thicker.
Yankee - Our HAWAIIAN sailing canoes all have safety amas. FYI the duke OC-4 is not being made any more. You can go to www.hawaiianoceanadventures.com to check out Nakoa's 4 man Hawaiian sailing canoes.
Attached is a photo of my personal sailing canoe!
