Refinishing a Makana paddle

I have 2 Makana paddles , probably about ten years old now. Just returning to OC1 after 8 years away. Paddles have some wear on the shaft, blade, etc. Should I re-finish it?

Yes, and before they touch water.

Sand them down to bare wood 80 grit works quick. Light 120, then hit them with 2 to 4 coats of McClosky's Man o War Semi Gloss. Foam brush use once, toss. Less is more that whole thing with each coat, nice long strokes (insert "that's what she said").

Sand with 120 between coats, 220 on the 3rd just to rough it up. If your keen do more than 4 for added protection, but after 4 i get bored and stop - and the finish is normally pretty good by then so. . .

Have fun, welcome back to oc1

Using McClosky's Man o War in the spray can for your shaft will keep the application simpler and with better results. Brush or foam pad for the blade itself is the only way to go.

You should re-finish them especially if they are Makana Alii paddles.
