Stop the bottled water abuse, find another way to hydrate

I knew bottled water sucks, but I didn't know it sucks this much. Not only is it a clear waste of resources (only 20 percent of plastic water bottles used in the US are recycled, and far too many of the rest probably end up in the Pacific Garbage Patch), it's an incredible waste of money for consumers, who pay more than the price of gasoline for water that's marketed as "pure," but in reality is largely unregulated, full of harmful toxins like BPA, and far less safe for drinking than free tap water.

As paddlers, and guardians of the ocean, lets make a stand to stop this waste.

Cool video. Its always hard to know what to believe these days. EVERYONE has an agenda. The part that I can believe is the amount of oil used to make and transport the water bottles. If everyone drank tap water that would have a pretty big impact, I think.

One of those things that leaves the consumer asking ok so what is the RIGHT thing to do? Tap water? Brita? bottles? Nalgene safe or not? Aww shite, I might as well drink diet pepsi.

These lads helped us out with an event a year ago.
It is a good option. Bottles are made from sugar base, not petroleum base.

You right on the kinipopo joe,
Us guys all grow up drinking pipe water. The supermarkets before never carry bottled water (maybe distilled for the iron) because nobody buy the stuff and everybody would think you lolo when you can go suck the pipe for free.
Only when we go mainland, we notice all these bottle water in the stores for sale. Yes, the pipe water on the mainland is not crystal clear or taste as good as Hawaii pipe water. But the thought of buying bottled water from the store was stupid for us Hawaii students that went college on the mainland, especially when you can get all the water free from the pipe. No matter where you stay, you get use to drinking pipe water. But now a days at Costco, all the Hawaii people are buying bottle water. What a bunch of lolos. No can beat the taste of Hawaii pipe water. What they scared for? Heptachlor?

I once worked in environmental research and a buddy of mine did research on bottled vs. tap water (this was about 15 yrs ago). Bottled water was (and maybe still is ?) unregulated. He found that tap water was safer (bacteria wise) than bottled water. My wife is a nut when it comes to drinking tap water. Do what I do....save the bottles AND refill them from the tap when no one is looking :)

My honolulu tap water started tasting like swimming pool water so I went to Cosco and bought an under sink "RO Pure" reverse osmosis and filter kit for 189.00. Took me only a couple of hours to install. My water tastes like new again. Now I just fill my stainless steel bottle and off I go. Why pay for a bottle of water and look where the plastic ends up. Besides the bottled water taste like crap anyway.

Tap water is regulated by the EPA and subject to various standards you can view here. These are revised fairly regularly and as part of the standards, each year the water treatment plant has to provide a report on the past year performance, how many times a contaminant was over a limit, etc. Sometimes this is mailed (small distribution systems) but for larger systems (say NYC) it would probably be posted online.

Bottled water is not regulated by the EPA but by the FDA, and only then when it is sold across state lines (i.e. the domain of the federal goverment). If it's sold in the state where bottled the state would be responsible for regulating it. State and FDA regulations are less strict than the EPAs and there is no public reporting required that I'm aware of. Most bottled water is typically just tap water that sits in a plastic bottle and develops a bad taste from the plastic.

If your water tastes like chlorine or smells strongly of chlorine (i.e. swimming pool water), this is okay. Treatment plants have to add a residual dose of disinfectant to prevent bacterial growth in the distribution system and this is what you are smelling. If you don't like the taste/smell, buy a filter that says it will remove these odors like Marara did.

Last thing, if you want a good water bottle, SIGG are nice but expensive. Their epoxy coating (old style) contained BPA but leached less than from a typical plastic bottle. Their new coating is BPA free but less durable. Better than SIGG are the stainless steel bottles made by Klean Kanteen. You can even use them to boil water while camping.

poops, don't believe anything. Always question, question authority, question society, question reality, question yourself.

Now that I boycott water bottles, sodas start make sense, but driving up to the gas station and asking "where da hose stay?" not gonna happen (notice i didn't say "suck pipe" lol), drinking from the hose at the canoe club, no probs. Yeah Koa.... not lolo in my book

Hows that filter bottle? would be sweet if it could also desalinate, no more water bottles in chase boats

Bottled water = 'lolo' for sure - some things never change.

Soda is a close second for lolo. Soda is to tap water what Honolulu harbor water is to Koolau rain water.

You can get rid of the chlorine taste by putting ice cubes into the water or putting the water into the fridge. It works.

In Paris, France they have one of the best tap waters in the world, coming from the Alp mountains.

The French government started a program to reeducate people about drinking that water, they were all on Perrier or Avian bottled water.

Soda contains the same sweetener that is used to grow pigs faster - not for my use anymore.
