successful oahu-kauai relay swim

on saturday 11/20 @ 0530 6 swimmers started a relay from kaena pt oahu to nawiliwili kauai. they rotated in 1 hour shifts until hitting a huge southeasterly current . it took their speed from 2 mph to 1/4 mph for 6+ hours. during this time they swam in 1/2 hour rotations. .the swimmers swam continuously for 47 hours and 55 min. ending on monday 11/.22 @0525. the swimmers were mike spalding, linda kaiser, billy brown, randy brown, joel swartz, michelle macy.
it was rare to swim an hour without being stung numerous times by jelly fish and man o war. 1 shark approached.
the escort boat was the sailing canoe, kialoa , owned by mike spalding. there was a crew of 6 including captain kai bartlett. this is the first time the 72 mile Kaieiewaho channel has been crossed by swimmers. conditions were good with big rolling swells and moderate winds.
