Windsock at Dad Center finish?

Did it matter which side of the windsock the canoe passed in front of OCC yesterday?

Submitted by Novice B 08 on Mon, 08/23/2010 - 9:15am

The instructions were to go to the left of the windsock (i.e. windsock on non-ama side). If you go on the other side of it you run the risk of scraping the reef!

rachel,
Thanks, we didn't see it in this year's race info, and heard it was not mentioned at the coaches' meeting, but there was something about it in the 2009 race packet.
Some canoes were told at the finish that they had to go back around the sock to avoid a DQ if they had passed it with their ama side. After the results came out it looks like they were not DQ'd for that.

Novice B 08 ~ FYI, I was at the coaches' meeting and they definitely said to pass the windsock on the non-ama side. I noticed there was one canoe that got DQ'd and wondered what it was for. I assumed it would have been for not going around DH buoy which would make a much bigger difference in your finish time. Going on the other side of the sock you simply risk running up on the reef, but you aren't cutting off any distance.

I wasn't at the meeting, being a male spectator, but appreciate your clarification. I'll pass it along to some novice women I know, so they can use the info next year.

So the DQ was because their escort boat didn't have a VHF radio on board.....bahahaha
