This looks wild! But how does it actually work? (A few years aago I did a V6 race on an oval course, match race with 2 canoes going around the oval in opposite directions; kanu going clockwise had right of way at crossing point. First 1 back to starting buoy won; elimination race. was plenty fun and no wrecks.)
Here some kayaks seem to be at right angles to the others...?

They race around a square changing relay as each person passes the point of the square. They start off paddling in opposite directions. This one was done with a rectangle with start paddlers on opposite sides so more kayaks could race. To make it more exciting i would make the square smaller.
