The cost of doing Molokai Hoe

Aloha,

I write this just to share information and not to complain.

I know for many national and international crews doing the Molokai Hoe is a dream, and it takes a lot of planning. I am sharing this information to help crews plan ahead and be aware of some of the costs, as of this year. This is also from talking to 5 other teams

Of course these prices vary depending on several factors, and I am hoping others will share their information.

2011-Molokai Hoe

$850- Race Registration per team this include getting your OC-6 shipped to Molokai and then hauled down to the race site on Molokai and you get a T-shirt.

$900 to $1500- per team Escort Boat for the race. Yes I heard that range.

$200-$300-If you are borrowing a canoe, a donation to the club you are borrowing from is appropriate, since you will probably be using their rigging and canvas/spray skirt.

$900-$1400-Housing per team-Depending on how comfortable you want to be or how last minute you arranged housing. It is very hard to get a 1 night reservation-usually 3 night minimum.

$200-$600- Per Team Transportation around Molokai-Renting Cars and Vans. Again do you want to be comfortable or slammed in the back of a truck-your choice?. Also depends on how long you are on Molokai prior to the race This includes gas. Gas is $6.00 a gallon on Molokai

$10 per paddler-Race insurance

$90-$175-Per Paddler-One way flight to Molokai. Again depending on how last minute. I know more and more paddlers took escort boats over from Oahu to save money.

Other costs to consider-Food and Liquids for the race. Food costs a lot more on Molokai.

So you are looking at $450 to $600 per paddler not including travel to and lodging on Oahu.

Of course there is the cost of beer afterwards.

What do you think Shell pays to compete, or other Tahiti Crews.

It costs Shell $30,000, but they collect all the prize money for winning so it probably doesn't cost that much. That is why they keep coming back because Molokai Hoe gives the winner all that cash.

I hope they keep coming back until they get beat, rather than deciding that the prize money isn't worth it and staying home.
