It's usually always the Sunday before Columbus Day (2nd Monday of October). If that is the case, then it should be Sunday October 7, 2012.

Yeah, it is definitely October 7th.

I just got a premonition as I wrote that that a Hawai'i crew will win the channel next year. Maybe in an open class canoe?
Too bad I've never had a premonition come true.

You may be right Luke I had a premonition that 2012 is gonna be year of change and surprises, maybe an Aussie crew.

If Aussie Nationals are any gauge, Australia is going to be unstoppable next year.
And yeah, definitely change and surprises.

Luke is correct.

. The race was held later in October when it coincided with Aloha Week but that was back in the 60's before most of you were born. Sometime in the late 70's or early 80's it was moved to the Sunday before Columbus Day as stated by Luke.

I had some premonitions about next year's Molokai Hoe too:
-It will be on October 13, 2013. Lucky 13!
-A crew that puts in twice as much training time as anybody else will win.
-Luke will give us all the reasons why they should allow unlimited canoes, but they still won't allow them because clearly 400lb canoes made of fiberglass and polyester resin have been traditionally used for nearly 1500 years.

Maliko-- you forget to mention that I'm also going to complain about a lack of safety protocol.

Luke - keep complaining LOUDLY and OFTEN about the lack of a safety protocol, until the decision makers take this seriously and implement a TANGIBLE, MEANINGFUL and FUNCTIONAL response. Lip service does nothing to shift the paradigm. You have my full support (from California) for your noble and thankless efforts. I fear the consequences of doing little/nothing to improve the safety protocol.

Aloha nui loa.

Maybe it is time to make Molokai Hoe an iron race like it started out as. The athletes and equipment have made this an easy decision as evidenced by the surfski, oc1, and some of the unlimited 6 man races. Today's atheltes can certainly handle this as an iron race. Most of the problems arise with escort boats, so these would go away with an iron race. The escort boats would then become safety boats. I am not too sure what to do with us old guys, but Molokai is really for the fast young guns!!

k

i think random drug testing needs to be adminstered of all top 5 teams, one random paddler from each team should be tested. it's $200 ish per paddler - i am not sure if there is enough budget to do this. this way we can finally silence critics (like me).

i also agree, water protocol is important, in hawaiki nui you have to have a commisaire on the each support boat, that ensures race protocols are observed - hats, tshirts, changes, waterdrops etc.

i havent seen the latest waivers and forms of molo hoe oc6 though, if this is all implemented, please advise.
