HCKT funding

We had mentioned it at the Kialoa to Kalapawai race, but we just want everyone to know that this year Kanaka Ikaika is dubbing the Poai Puni series the "HCKT Poai Puni Series", as a portion of every entry fee goes towards support of the Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team, and the Hawaii based USACK program. As many know, HCKT is no longer funded and this makes it extremely difficult for our young athletes to focus on their goals. The paddlers of HCKT will strive to represent us all against the world. So anytime you have a chance, do something to support the program.

Aloha Jim,
We at Hawaiian Canvas support whenever we can, donating custom canvas bags or clothing for raffles, silent auctions, paddlers (we are giving one to Ryan for his birthday :)) If you have any of these types of things coming up, let us know and we can make a merchandise donation (sorry, cash is a bit tight since the birth of Ariana). Call or email Kiri 927-7989 or info@hawaiiancanvas.com
Mahalo nui loa for your dedication and support

Does anyone know how much many they lack on a monthly basis. It would be nice to have a graph at the races saying how much they have vs. how much they lack. Also, some endates. Most paddlers like goals and if we could see what needs to be done I think we would donate more likely. I wouldn't mind donating at each race if I could see what progress we've made and how much more needs to be done.

The major set back which some readers may have heard about is that the USOC cut USA Canoe and Kayak's budget from 900k to 600k. In that cut was the funding for the Senoir National Team and its coach, Guy Wilding. This directly affects HCKT because in June 2010 we were able to help convince Guy to take the job as Senoir National Men's Coach and move the program to Hawaii and have his wife Shelley coach our kids program. The cut/short fall to the mens National Team Program is approximately 150k, which includes coaching salary, travel, accommadations for the team and coach and racing fees at the World Cup Races and Olympic Qualifier. HCKT as 4 of the 10 athletes on the senior national team, so USA Canoe Kayak is asking us to take a large role in raising the needed funds so our local boys like Pat and Ryan Dolan can have the chance to go to the Olympic Qualifier, prepared. We are not the only club being ask to helping out but we have the most to lose, Guy and Shelley...Since there arrival they have made huge strides in our program and having the national team in Hawaii allows our future Olympians to stay in Hawaii and be part of our paddling community. The best way to help is to donate to HCKT and state that the donation should be used to help our "Hawaii National Team Members" or "Dolans Olympic Fund" and we will make sure it is used to get our Hawaii paddlers to the Olympics and keep the Wildings here and . HCKT.org or talk to Guy, Shelley, Pat, Ryan or myself at the next race. Thanks Chris Ball
