I'm probably wrong. But I thought all star crews ended up racing distance races under a club name.

I think you need to have a club back up the names of the paddlers and be liable for them. I mean cant have a family from Alabama who has never paddled in their life and make a "Team Smith," then get injured during the race. So Im going to say Yes you need to be a part of a canoe club to do distance season.

depends on the race. Most OHCRA races, yes. Molokai Hoe yes. Na Wahine O Ke Kai, no. pailolo challenge, Queen Liliuokalani races, no. Check the rules posted for the race you are interested in.
