Ho‘omau I Ka Nohona
Perpetuating ancestral ways

We honor tradition when we perpetuate it—when we bring the best of the past forward, then work creatively within the dynamic flow of tradition, with sensitivity, respect, and knowledge of what has come before. A living tradition welcomes appropriate innovation. To preserve ancestral ways is merely an attempt to halt the flow of change; but change will come, and it is up to us to guide change with aloha, whatever our heritage or worldview.

The song E Mau Ana Ka Ha‘aheo says:

Me na mea ‘oi loa
Mai na wa ma mua
E holomua kakou i keia ao
Ua hiki mai ka wana‘ao
No ka ho‘ola
A me ka ho‘ola hou

Using the very best things
From times past
Let us move forward in this age
The dawn has indeed arrived
For revitalization
And reawakening

That is indeed the goal—to perpetuate the traditions passed down to us from na kupuna, while embracing the creative potential of the present moment.

This is my favorite quote expressing exactly how we are moving forward with all our paddling adventures today from www.okupu.com.

Imua!

Awesome post.

Talked to Keizo. They were putting boats in the water. Race started at 9.

#7 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 9:26am

Updates from Keizo:

9:42
Kamanu and Primo Tied

10:13
Kamanu leading, Outrigger Connection not far behind and south, and Primo third.

#8 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 10:19am

Per Keizo. Primo, Kamanu, outrigger connection all close and leading.

40 minutes in Primo was in the lead.

Currently Kamanu leads by 100 yds, Outrigger Connection 2nd, Primo in 3rd. Whoops. Just saw Luke's post.

#9 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 10:25am

A few miles to the finish. Team Kamanu maintains a lead. No updates on the rest of the pack.

#10 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 11:21am

Is primo's bradley a 400lb or 200lb boat? I had heard rumors of him making a light one for them for the Olamau…

#11 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 11:35am

I heard Primo is in a full-spec. 400 pounder.

#12 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 11:37am

As far I understand they are in a spec Bradley. This is actually a very good test for the new designs. The crews in the unlimited boats are obviously great paddlers but they have never gotten to race against Hawaii's best crew (primo). It would be safe to say that if people can beat Primo then the boats do indeed make a big difference. That said I heard Primo is missing one of their best guys in Danny Ching who may be with the Cali guys.

#13 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 11:44am

"primo is missing one of their best guys, danny ching" Will isn't a bad replacement to have…..

#14 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 11:59am

Ah. Very true. Didn't know Will was in there. Obviously a very very good paddler too.

#15 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 12:00pm

Yup as I understand it Will is now living on Maui and will be replacing Peter in the "maui 6"

#16 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 12:05pm

Kamanu by 5 min over Livestrong, Outrigger Connection 20 seconds behind Livestrong, Primo 4th.

#17 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 12:43pm

Anybody know the lineups for the top 4 crews?

#18 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 1:11pm

Received from Trav Grant via iphone

We won first leg by alot. It was insanely big and rough. 6&5 both had steering blades half the race. Pretty crazy.
Pretty sore already Tomorrow a bit bigger again. Trav

5 and 6 w/ steering blades...those guys are akamai! Did they invent that idea or has it been done before?

#20 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 2:43pm

A Bradley 'Striker' would have kicked some booty today. That boat smokes down wind in big surf. Thinking out loud.......

#21 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 3:40pm

5&6 steering? I remember some guys doing that in Kapa'a not long ago. It wasn't by choice, it was a necessity. Thought that's pretty much how everyone handles it when the conditions get really big, right?

Congrats on everyone for finishing today and good luck tomorrow on a cranking windy Ka'iwi channel!

#22 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 4:38pm

W/ both guys using steering blades?

#23 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 4:16pm

Congratulations to Scott Gamble, Manny Kulukulualani, Bill Pratt, Travis Grant, Scott Hendricks & Jimmy Austin for winning Stage I of the Pa'a Eono!

#25 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 4:33pm

Lets also give it up for Bruce Blankenfeld's Hui Nalu crew...400 pound...bet they are stoked! Bradley. Oahu bound.

#26 Sat, 05/21/2011 - 6:34pm

What's the word today?

#27 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 5:01am

Gawd I hope it wasn't cancelled by the Coast Guard! Was anyone filming like last time?

#28 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 7:21am

Ocean Paddler TV has cameramen riding along w/Kamanu and Livestrong.

#29 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 7:38am

Talk to me goose...awaiting updates.

#30 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 9:09am

Evolution of designs is great. However I don't get the excitement of a Ferrari beating a CHevy Caprice. Both offer nice rides, different cost. Ferrari certainly more exciting but not in the same class. Not everyone can afford the Ferrari. Real racing is when people are competing on similiar equipment. Not much similiarity with that Kamanu canoe and a Bradley 400 lb monster. Molokai is still the real race as far as I'm concerned-similiar equipment. In any case, the conditions had to make it fun for all paddling!

#31 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 9:40am

Are we on today? CRAZY weather. In for some serious ass kicking. Ouch.

#32 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 9:45am

Sorry. No updates today. Cell phone reception all gone.

#33 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 10:35am

Thanks for trying.

#34 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 11:04am

Is the Ferrari/Chevy analogy accurate (in terms of cost)? A fully rigged lightning is about 13k, and I believe the Kawainui sold for 15k. I heard this year's Kamanu boat is more expensive due to the use of epoxy resin vs. vinylester.

#35 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 12:50pm

according to Kamanu's facebook, team kamanu and primo are battling with about 6 miles to go.... is this correct?

#36 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 11:54am

Any results? Top 5?

#37 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 2:01pm

friend said he thinks it was primo, livestrong, grn kamanu boat, blu kamanu boat, red/wht M2.

#38 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 2:10pm

Message 3 Sent to my Iphone From Trav @ finishline

Tough day today. Super super rough, time 3:44 very fast time!!
Team Kamanu 1st just! we were battling the whole way with team primo who were in a stock Bradley! They are insanely good. We only just got them at the end. Then livestrong 3rd I think.

#39 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 2:47pm

thanks rambo. my friend must not have seen team kamanu boat as he was watching race from the blowhole area, team kamanu must have been around the point already and not visible. did kamanu make a new unlimited boat for this year's race because he did see the grn/blk and blu/blk boat behind livestrong? thanks again for the correct info.

#40 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 3:04pm

I think the KAmanu hull alone went for 15K to cover costs. In any case it had to be a real fun run today- I'm sure everyone paddling loved it. Hats off to all who paddled as Molokai Solo in any canoe is tough.

#41 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 3:07pm

kamanu
primo (spec bradley)
livestrong
lanikai in kawainui
beachboys in kapaa
lanakila california (spec bradley)
outrigger connection
hui lanakila

i think.....

#42 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 4:07pm

That's pretty amazing that the Primo guys did so well in their spec Bradley.

#43 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 4:29pm

Camera phone vid of Kamanu and Primo rounding portlock http://www.youtube.com/user/thomassean#p/a/u/0/yj-KhYOKvfc

#44 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 5:10pm

thanks for sharing that... primo guys timing and blend was so sick. unreal.
das why cuz!

I had a great weekend, but everything seemed so insignificant when compared to eono.

#45 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 6:13pm

PS: primo keeping it close in-spite of (arguable) boat disadvantage, should be testament to 6man mentality, working together, Hawaiian values, etc. Aloha to all you warriors who when do dis eono race. cheehu!!

#46 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 6:19pm

They sure looked fresh for just having paddled that far!

#47 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 7:05pm

Hey Does anyone know the Team Primo lineup and the Livestrong lineup? Cheers LB

#48 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 7:16pm

NICE JOB TO EVERYONE!!!!!!

#49 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 7:47pm

a little vid from my front row seat during the last two days.... enjoy! Congrats to all!

#50 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 8:59pm

Sonny Bradley is a happy man today. Right on! What a great race. Very interesting outcomes. Can't wait to see some actual footage. Great job to all who participated. Ho'e Pa'a!

#51 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 8:59pm

And here is some footage! What a rush!!!! How exciting! Thanks. LOVE IT!!!!!!

#52 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 9:03pm

Wow.

#53 Sun, 05/22/2011 - 9:47pm

EPIC! Has any Kaiwi race had conditions like that two years in a row?

#54 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 6:55am

Another shot of Team Kamanu rounding Portlock.

#55 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 7:35am

any links with full results? Mahalos!

#56 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 7:43am

Jim, I'm going to say no.

#57 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 9:13am

I love how "Spot on" Primo looks. I'd venture to say that if Kamanu guys had better timing and more similar strokes they would have performed much better. In flat water you can sort of feel when you have crappy power application, in rough seas you cannot and thus can't really adjust to make boat run better. They could use the assistince of someone like Kala to get them working better together. I would love to see what Primo guys would do in Kapa'a or any open design boat.

Hands down- OPEN DESING BOATS ARE FASTER THAN SPEC BOATS!! Kapa'a is the best.....ok JK I don't know. But, if you look at restults Lanikai wasn't far ahead of Beachboys and they had 6 better paddlers (by judging from one man season) and three fresh paddlers. As in the question of cost for open design canoes. Why won't a builder come out and give us some type of ballpark figure to eliminate these crazy figures that get thrown around?

#58 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 11:53am

I thought they both looked pretty awesome. As for price, I reckon somewhere in the 25-30 k range. Maybe they can get cheaper as they develop a mold? Perhaps one of the more technically inclined posters would comment : )

#59 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 11:59am

It would be interesting to see how a 200 lb lightning compares heads up to the newer open class designs, since the weight difference by itself should make a huge difference in performance.

#60 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 1:59pm

what makes kapaa the best?

#61 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 1:58pm

Manowar- I was just messin around. I own that boat ....that why. I have no idea what is better.

#62 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 2:15pm

dacho, to give you an idea. the outrigger connection boat was 200lbs with pipe iako, a closed deck, and light ama. it was paddled by Karel, Kea, Tapa, Raven, Justin, and Ka'awa which is a very stacked crew. Shape plays a huge part as well. Not just weight.

That's what makes Team Primo's performance that much more amazing.

#63 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 3:45pm

healthyearth, are you saying that Kapa'a has the uncanny ability to make average guys over-achieve?

#64 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 3:16pm

jc, Yeah it blows me away that they were so close. That's why I was thinking how they would have done minus 200lbs? No doubt the new shapes are faster. The 200 lb mirage is a good baseline. Be interesting to see one for the lightning, Primo's performance threw some assumptions out the window

#65 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 3:34pm

Just to clarify, Ourigger's hull alone (Vosa) was 200lbs. It was not 200lbs fully rigged with iakos, ama, and deck. Race rules were for minimum 200lb hulls on unlimited designs. There was some drama with that design specification this past weekend on another boat...

#66 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 3:45pm

For me personally this race simply validated how big of a difference the canoes make. Look at any major race team Primo races. They absolutely dominate. No crew in Hawaii beats them. The two times anyone has ever come close to beating Primo happened this year in Kona (when the other crews were in unlimited boats) and this 'Eono (where a crew with great paddlers although not as well blended or practiced as Primo) was able to win.

Last year's 'Eono also proved canoe design and weight are huge factors. A team of fairly good paddlers finished only 5 minutes behind Team Pa'a which was filled with all star paddlers. In any channel crossing the Mafia crew in a spec boat would have been somewhere around 30 minutes or more behind team Pa'a.

To clarify, Kapa'a was 188# with no canvas iako or ama. The ama was 35# and the iako were probably much heavier than aluminum pipe iako. The Team Kamanu hull yesterday was 200# per 'Eono rules.

Edit: I do not mean to belittle Lightnings or Mirages. They are obviously the fastest a boat can be and still abide by HCRA or OHCHRA rules for shape and weight. The real excitement begins when Karel and Sonny start designing unlimited boats of their own!

#67 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 4:09pm

Jim- I'll let you judge. We have two guys that regularly finish near bottom of one man races. The best I've done is 22 overall on Oahu champs race. Two Gus paddle skis, one who is 50 got 11 this past year, the other got 25. I don't know much about the other guy except that he's chatty and paddles in California. So Jim, on paper should we have finished where we did?

#68 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 4:05pm

I hear you, healthy. I was just joking around because the Mafia guys (last year's Kapa'a crew) are so quick w/ the self denigrating humor. Obviously, it's an awesome boat, but I'm sure both crews are more talented than they give themselves credit for being. You don't just come in 4 or 5th place across the Channel in that kind of time by virtue of the boat alone. Pat yourselves on the back! That being said, I agree w/ jc9 that the races have shown that the open boats are far superior to the specs, especially over the length of a long, difficult iron race like that.

#69 Mon, 05/23/2011 - 5:29pm

Will this be he last race of its kind,,,,historic ! Epic! Wonderfull in so many ways. Were there enough entries and enough outside noise to make it work economically? They did not mention it in the Star-Advertiser today. I was surprised. I hope the TV carries it. You who participated did a great thing for the sport. Did enough people notice to carry this through maybe to a new level? I hope so. Would have been nice to get some internatiional participation.
