The base of the shaft of my mudbrook xp paddle is getting worn to bare wood, should it be resurfaced with resin, or varathane, or what would you all suggest

Sand and a couple coats of epoxy.

Ace Hardware has marine varnish in a spray can (in Keaau Hawaii anyway!) VERY easy to get a really smooth factory like refinish. I did my wife's paddle and it looks like new...

I usually use helmsman spar varnish. Seems to turn out well.
