Sand Island Marina Plans

Just got done watching the news about the states plans for the Sand Island /Mokueia Island area . It is scary! Whoever drew up these plans obviously has his scales and priorities wrong. First and foremost the shoreline should always be for the "PEOPLE" and ocean activities not boat owners looking for cheap ocean front property. I think the state should look to the west and clean up and rebuild Keehi Marina(which they have begun) then look farther east and take care of those folks at the Ala Wai Harbor before going on to the next great venture. Get to that meeting tomorow night at the Marine center at Sand Island and express your thoughts and concerns.

All paddlers who can attend should, in the plans a private company will be managing more than half the length of shoreline at S.I.. 430 boat slips will fill the area in a private marina. New Hope, Keahiakahoe, Healani , Kanaktion, and Word of Life will be impacted. Paddlers unite and represent!
630pm to 8pm at Honolulu community college marine education center. Classroom 2. 10 Sand Island Parkway. Right at the light after you go over the bridge. Aloha

No matter what the state or city government says. the underlining values they have are to create tax revenue and grow their programs.

For long term viability and maintaining the greatness of Hawaii, their value should be how do we create the most park, beach, and open space-That is not their first priority.

Therefore all groups dedicated to beachs, open space, and parks should get together and hire the meanest and most aggresive lawyers in Hawaii to fight everything that doesn;t create park, beach, and open space.

Letter writing and showing up at meetings helps a little, but not as much as aggressive lawyers.

Final rant-The mass transit system should have had an airport link. Great cities around the world do. It makes it so much easier for locals and vistors.

The legislature never gives the DLNR enough money for Ke`ehi ... or the Ala Wai, or Sand Island, or to manage any other State lands. They don't even have enough funds to repair the doors on the bathroom.

Most cities have public / private partnerships. Why not Hawai`i? If we oppose every plan, like we always seem to do, then our infrastructure will continue to decay. I remember when the Ala Wai paddlers joined forces to fight the Bike Plan. There was a lot of potential federal money involved in the Plan ... we could have integrated paddling needs with biker needs, and gotten a good bike path AND better landscaping and storage space for our halaus. Instead? Instead we showed up in force and stopped that plan. We won! And bikers got a mediocre bike path with dangerous street crossings, and canoe clubs continued to have to stack our canoes on each other & walk around in Ala Wai muck & lose paddlers each year to staph infections. It was an incredible lost opportunity.

It would be better to take a look at the marina, and then to look at the mitigation measures, and ask for what we need . Let's benefit from a project for once.
