I am borrowing a canoe from a friend and on my first go out I developed a pretty good abrasion from an uneven edge of the seat. I don't want to stop paddling (who does?), any good ideas on how to cover it to avoid further damage and discomfort? I've been putting big band aids on it that sort of work, but remember when I was a kid going backpacking with scouts using something called "mole skin" I think. Any ideas? I would think this is not too uncommon

You might check out Spenco Blister Kit. They're available on Amazon.

Blister or "strawberry"? No pun intended, but I always wear an under garment. Go ahead Bret run with it.

Try wearing a non-cotton fast trying underwear like those made by Under Armour or Exofficio, just make sure it doesn't have seams where your rub spots are. Sports Authority carries them. Get yourself some BodyGlide, also available at Sports Authority and probably most paddling related shops, or order from Amazon if you don't have one nearby. It's back by the shoes at Sports Authority and I know TriPaddle has it. Slather it on any spot that might rub. I find bodyglide lasts about 2 and a half hours of shorts-to-skin before I start to feel the chaffing, and I've used it 5+ hours for skin-to-skin. It's great stuff.
Until your current wound heals though...moleskin will come off pretty fast. Blister type bandages or duct tape will work a little better but not for very long. Get yourself some New-Skin Liquid Bandage. Slather it on the wound, it'll sting like crazy for a couple minutes. Give it a few more minutes to dry, then rub on bodyglide over the top of it. Then use underwear so you have 2 layers - that way the layers rub against each other instead of your skin.

Putting myself on report here, but think bigger picture; you need to prevent staph infection. Aggressive wash of any open wounds after exiting the ocean. Even if not canal-grade water, no difference. Coastal waters offer the same risk. Hot compress on any persistent areas that don't heal as fast as you expect. Living this dream, no fun. OC6 fresh out of the halau = another source for badness through small wounds and scrapes (okole, knee, foot, hands). Ounce of prevention...

Secret weapon.... So true, must wash aggressively and keep clean. Great advise! Last infarction I had, 6x it had to be packed. Frickin wick sticking out and all, it was liike a tampon in the butt cheek. Not fun at all! Maybe TMI, if it helps tho.... Zuma if it feel like a zit or ingrown hair, watch close, get checked. Once of prevention is spot on!
I'm using Bodyglide too, stuff works great, along with a triple anti-biotic ointment. No problems since.
Good luck.

We're assuming you can't fix the source of the problem as Onno suggests because it's not your boat. In the meantime, Chinchillas are easily trained and not THAT expensive, just stuff one under the rough edge of the seat, it feels awesome and the ladies will love to pet your new friend.

Let's not forget the ol' standby Vegemite :-)

Hey Rambo, how do you deal with sand sticking to the vegemite? I lubed up extra heavy for a Kaiwi training run today, and after going through the shorebreak at Kaluakoi my groin was like a frickin shake 'n' bake pork chop. I had enough left in my shorts to build a sand castle on the boat ramp at Hawaii Kai. I tried to swim and scrub it off but it was impossible, plus my buddies were sitting there waiting for me ready to go, and I felt stupid holding up the show wrestling with my junk like i was fighting off a shark attack.
