From Tahitinews-

The first step of the Hawaiki Nui Va'a race, contested between the islands of Huahine and Raiatea, was won on Wednesday by team Paddling Connection. The teams EDT Va'a Hoe Matairea and finish second and third respectively.

Shell Va'a team that everyone expected, did not mark the first step. It is instead the team Paddling Connection which is imposed on the first stage of 45 km long.

Having managed to extricate himself from the imposing mass of canoes set to start (85 in total), Paddling connection quickly took things in hand. The team has consistently been at the outposts and was only worried in the last kilometers of the first step, EDT Va'a. Both canoes are delivered to a memorable mano a mano at the entrance of the lagoon of Raiatea, but it is ultimately Paddling connection who crossed the finish line in first position, in 3 hours 17 minutes and 9 seconds, relegating EDT Va'a one minute.

Another surprise team Huahine, Matairea Hoe, finished in fourth place ahead of Team OPT, Shell Va'a not crossing the finish line in fifth position in the first 9 minutes.

The second stage, the shortest Hawaiki Nui will be played on Thursday morning between Raiatea and Tahaa. This is an opportunity to see if the dreaded Shell Va'a team - winner yet, however, there is barely a month, the ho'e Molokai, Hawaii - is preserved in anticipation of the rest of the competition or if she just finally found it harder.

Just wanted to make a correction on the 1st leg stats (Huahine - Raiatea)... not that anyone cares but Paddling won the 1st leg with EDT 100 yds behind.

I only wanted to make the correction because it was hands down the best Finish to a race I have ever seen.

Paddling Connection closes down a 500 yard lead from EDT and takes the win.

I will post a video soon.
