Petra, it may be best to join a club on maui first. Some clubs probably have rec paddling right now too. Your chances of meeting other OC1 paddlers will be pretty high.

see Felipe Gomes at Kai Waa- he can provide you with some basic lessons and line up different types of canoes for you to try . Do join an Outrigger canoe club near your home as you will learn tons from whoever is your coach.

Stop by one of the Maui Canoe and Kayak Club races to talk with racers and check out different canoes. This Saturday the race is starting and finishing at Hanakao'o in Lahaina/Ka'anapali, at 10am.

Thanks for the good suggestions! I will look into the rec paddling at the different clubs and see how that can work.
