2014 Steinlager Kaiwi Solo

Aloha to all,

I live in Australia and I'm trying to evaluate the costs & complexities of competing at the 2014 Steinlager Kaiwi Solo to be held on 25th of May.

The two main questions for me would be:

  • Is it possible to hire an OC1 for the race? Logistics involved, etc.
  • Does anyone have a ballpark figure on how much would cost a support boat?

Mahalo in advance and Happy XMas everyone!

An option is to do the Maui-Molokai. No need escort boat and the run can be great fun (surf!). Or with a partner, do the Kauai World Challenge a week later (5/3), no need escort boat. Escort boats if you can find one are running around $1000-1400

Thanks bruddahs for the replies!

With the support boat cost associated, the Molokai to Oahu is already out of question. Thanks paddlefast for the M2M suggestion

Have an awesome Xmas!!!

Aloha everyone, I have some questions about taking part in the solo this coming year. First thing I apologise if this has been covered before. I guess I am just looking for some basic course knowledge, or maybe points of reference for somebody that has not done the course. Or is it as simple As following the escort boats ahead of me? I guess being unfamiliar to the area just bothers me. Any advice or knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

You should be able to find an escort for the solo for a bit less than $1000. And most canoe manufacturers will rent you a canoe. With shipping to the race start and pick-up from the finish, you're looking at around $300 for the canoe. But I second the idea of doing M2M or KWC. Both of those are epic races and cheaper than the solo. Work up to doing the solo eventually, but I wouldn't suggest it as your first race in Hawai'i (assuming that you haven't done a major race in Hawai'i yet).

@Diesel Paddler- I highly recommend following the escort boat when it's flat. Best to get on the first or second wave and ride it as much as possible to your destination. How you think all the top guys cross so fast.

@healthyearth - hah if only it was that easy. Maybe a solar powered motor as well.
