This person has been working really hard, I believe Phillip Yee will be in top 5 of the F 40-49 division. The strategy to put himself in that division was nothing short of brilliant. I have a feeling that the other F 40-49 competitors already feel defeated and might not show up. I'm excited to see what other entrants follow Phillips moves to put themselves in winning contention. Let the games of the mind begin. Phillip is thinking, I've got checkmate.......but did Phillip forget that others can still make moves up until the deadline.

Some questions to be answered.
What division will Manny place himself? Are others looking for him to make the first division move? If he makes the move to the F division how will the others react? Will they delay their decision so that no one else picks up on their strategy?

What's a transsexual supposed to do?

#2 Fri, 04/12/2013 - 2:49pm

Pat or Manny

#3 Mon, 04/15/2013 - 8:17am

Esss Kay Peeezee

Simeon Ke-Paloma takes the race tied with Alfred.

#4 Sun, 04/14/2013 - 8:04am

Danny Ching all day. He's in the absolute prime of his paddling career & has something extra to prove for his new sponsor. Expecting a wire to wire stomp, followed swiftly by everyone ditching their Pueo for Johnny's design.

#5 Sun, 04/14/2013 - 8:54am

Pat is the huge run away favorite.
Billy, Manny, kaihe and Danny will be on his heels the whole way, and not completely surprising if one of these guys win.

Next group of guys will be exciting to watch ,Alfred VG, SImeon, Makana Denton, Aaron Crepps, Keola Wright, Greg Long, Carlton Helm....All these guys have legitimate shots at top ten, and Im sure someone else on that solo list will pop into that battle with them.

As for the ladies, Lindsay Shank had an unreal year, but Lauren will dominate again, and will be top 20 overall.

#6 Sun, 04/14/2013 - 9:51am

This year Makana Denton will win. But next year look for Justin Watts to take it.

#7 Sun, 04/14/2013 - 1:39pm

Pat or Manny, just simply for their sense of commitment and loyalty.

#8 Sun, 04/14/2013 - 8:12pm

Kai Chong won M2M hands down in aweful flat conditions. Interesting that almost every OC1 division winner was on a Kai Waa in those conditions. So my vote for Solo is Pat Dolan or Kai Chong just because of their recent results. But Solo being solo, any of the top paddlers can win. Pray for wind to make it fun.

#9 Mon, 04/15/2013 - 8:17am

imagine how much they would have won by on a rudderless! Kaihe just graduated to hero status for dragging that rudder so far unassisted.

#10 Mon, 04/15/2013 - 9:23am

According to NOAA winds are suppose to be 9-10east I might have to go with Danny Ching however he's suppose to be on the (cut up) Ehukai im not sure if thats good or bad? I saw Manny paddling this weekend he looked pretty sharp and that new pueo looked pretty spiffy. But OMG Kai Chong taking M2M in terrible conditions!?!? Hopefully that didnt burn him out for the Solo. I have formulated the most accurate top 10 finishers using cutting edge technology and mathematical skills.
Possible winners 1-6
1. Danny only if (cut up) is good?
2. Manny if dealing with 100 some odd paddlers and escort boats dont mentally kill him
3. Patt if Healthyearth doesnt jinx him like last year
4. Kai B if he hydrates enough
5. Billy only on the cow boat
6. Kai C if theres any type of surf
7. Simeon
8. Aaron
9. Makana Denton
10. Nate

#11 Mon, 04/15/2013 - 10:06am

Honestly, whoever WANTS it the most will win, an I'm sure PAT wants its pretty bad after last year, and Mannys fire is pretty hot too. Should be interesting. But I hope it's not just me that is worried about PADDLING for possibly 5-6 hours? PLEASE LET THERE BE WIND!!!!

#12 Mon, 04/15/2013 - 11:16am

I want you to want me. The way that I want you!

KKK808 speaks the truth. Desire is required.

Also it's funny to see all the talk about someone winning to make a certain boat popular or winning because they are in a certain boat. Get over it! I'll suck no matter what I paddle! The good guys are fast on whatever they paddle! The scorpius line is wildly popular. They're great boats! The Pueo was already very popular before the last two solos. It too is a great boat! The Ehukai will probably be awesome too! I really think people put too much emphasis on what canoe wins. Paddlers aren't sheep and they buy what they want! If I based my decision to buy a boat on what others are paddling I'd never buy one.

Sorry for the rant. I'm sitting here waiting for my alternator to be rebuilt.

Im sure everyone has heard about the bombing at the Boston Marathon. My prayers go out to all the runners, family, staff that may have been hurt. My prayers also go out to those participating in the Solo hahahahaha lookin to be a tough one. This kid kainoa said that every other year is bad he might be on to something. Well I hope everyone has a good and safe race this year. Better add more songs to your ipods as well.

#14 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 11:42am

So. This solo is looking bad. South west winds. I am stuck doing it. Any help from you all out there.

#15 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 12:40pm

East winds on Saturday (according to my weather report). Maybe that'll carry over... always have hope Indar!

#16 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 1:01pm

I wish to update my prediction. Kaihe and Danny in a dead heat...

get it? Dead Heat...

#17 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 3:11pm

This year will NOT be Big Toddys year.

#18 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 3:29pm

Time to implement a waiting period for channel races. Of course it's more hassle and expense, but if Saturday is trades and Sunday is crappy who wouldn't wish we had set it up to go on whatever day looked better? M2M was bad enough and that was an hour shorter. Maybe I'm just complaining because I'm weak and slow and I fancy myself as devilishly clever in the bump, but after I passed the Kamalo buoy and that headwind kicked up I would have paid good money for someone to crash into me so I'd have an excuse to pull out.

There is a surfski race coming up in Spain (Eurochallenge) with a 2 day period, and a reversible course to maximize their chances of scoring downwind. They figured out how to pull it off somehow, after being introduced to downwind paddling only a few years ago, and with their economy in free fall.

#19 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 8:19pm

I've actually seen that "I'm devilishly clever in the bumps" look on your face out in the ocean.

#20 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 9:24pm

My forecast says SSE winds 10 mph. I'm still believing till Sunday morning 9:00 am there will be a slight bump. But a fast guy I know with the last name Ke Paloma, said at least the tide will be AMAZING. So we already have some sort of help back home!!! But agreeing with the iPod comment just in case... Haha

#21 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 10:57pm

Black Caviar is one.
Well watch out for another.
( Don't say a word Rambo)

#22 Tue, 04/16/2013 - 11:58pm

Ooooooooooooooooh buddy im getting excited!!!! its going to be a snail race all the way to the finish

#23 Wed, 04/17/2013 - 9:29pm

Having heard about people running out of water during M2M, maybe the organizers can set up floating hydration stations for the Solo? As the racers paddle by, they'll be able to grab water bottles just like runners do in marathons.

#24 Thu, 04/18/2013 - 1:08pm

Or paddlers can get fluids from their escort boats

#25 Thu, 04/18/2013 - 1:58pm

Lot's of Marykoll Paddling Program Alums on these lists. Voting Patty-Boy and Sim.
Best of luck to all.

#26 Thu, 04/18/2013 - 10:20pm

Just saw this. Good stuff.

#27 Fri, 04/19/2013 - 6:07pm

Any one has any update about the race?

#28 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 1:43pm

sounds like Danny, Daniel, Pat, Billy Lawson. But this is totally unconfirmed. Congrats to Danny on another title!

Apparently Danny took it by 3-4 seconds.

#29 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 2:25pm

Can I expect a Makana Denton video?

#30 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 3:41pm

One last update. It was by all reports an all time finish. This again is total third hand reporting. But Pat and Daniel were first and second. Danny caught one or two waves to close the gap. As they went under the bridge Daniel held a lead over Danny. Somewhere between the bridge and the finish line Danny gutted out the win. Unreal.

#31 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 4:04pm

Vids anyone?

#32 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 4:11pm

2nd place. Not bad for Chun's first solo.

#33 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 4:22pm

jpi92109, that is the understatement of the year! Huge props to everyone who raced at all. I was getting text updates on the lead three for the final couple hours of the race, and literally on the edge of my seat. Danny, Daniel and Pat are true fucking athletes to deal with that kind of head to head competition in those conditions. Super impressive. From a spectator's point of view, this was an awesome race.

Daniel's the man.

#34 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 4:47pm

daniel chun... theres a name no ones forgetting any time soon

#35 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 4:56pm

Seeing the three come under the bring at the same time was a pretty awesome sight.

Anyone have an update on how pat Dolan is doing? after the race medical personnel came and got him.

#36 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 4:58pm

Where is Daniel from?

#37 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 6:31pm

Heard Daniel is from Hawai‘i.

#38 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 7:16pm

Daniel is from da big island, Hawai'i Nui Moku O Keawe. He paddles for Livestrong/ Mellow Johnny.

There are more where he comes from. IMUA. Congrats Daniel!

#39 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 7:17pm

Sorry, that's what I meant. Big Island.

#40 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 7:22pm

Congrats to Daniel Chun not to shabby for first molo!

#41 Sun, 04/21/2013 - 9:03pm

Huge congratulations to braddah Daniel!! Those Boys train hard over there, Big Island represent. You won't see that name disappear anytime soon. Guarantee it. Daniel Chun/Keakua Nolan in the Relay? Thats a force to be reckoned with.

#42 Mon, 04/22/2013 - 12:30am

Heard Pat is doing good also. Was pretty dehydrated after so he got picked up more as a precaution. He's a freakin animal and will not stop pushing no matter what. Congrats Pat! You'll get that championship

#43 Mon, 04/22/2013 - 12:42am

How about a big congrats to Danny, world class athlete from CALIFORNIA who won the event!!

#44 Mon, 04/22/2013 - 3:44pm

Winning time just under 5 hours, or nearly 90 minutes slower than last year. What an epic slog that must have been.

PS: Still like my floating rafts idea. Save money on gas. Maybe set up some floating grandstands too.

#45 Mon, 04/22/2013 - 3:55pm

Check out the na wahine times. Not too shabby, considering the pure paddling conditions. They not too far behind, for every year, they narrowing the gap and moving up closer to the leaders. Attaway to go gals...

#46 Mon, 04/22/2013 - 6:33pm

Woooah guys and girls did you see that? That was one of the worst channels I've ever seen. Everyone who finished that race is my hero. Major props to the top 3 men: Danny, Daniel, pat. Ladies: Lauren, fast ass Aussie, Lindsey. The fricken Jr division: makana, maleko, carter. These young guys got some major dedication. Congrats to everyone. Hopefully the relay isn't as tough.

#47 Mon, 04/22/2013 - 10:04pm

Aloha,

Very impressive work by Danny. I would be interested to know the hull weight of that cut up canoe. I am guessing 23 pounds.

The canoes he was racing against were probably 18-19 pounds hulls.

Of course it is the paddler not the canoe.

I was out of town and didn;t hear-Chatter on Ocpaddler and Facebook was low.. Did line have an effect? I saw some names further up and some further back than I expected. Of course some paddlers thrive in the flat too.

#48 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 7:54am

Also when Danny is racing next year, I imagine he will appreciate the 16 pound hull tricked out China Puakea canoe he will be racing.

#49 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 5:00am

Any PIC'S of Johnny's "Ehukai" Canoe that Danny Race on?

#50 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 7:43am

Was on the water all day watching the EPIC, EPIC battle. Grueling to say the least, with major props to everyone that finished. But, those top 3 guys...major brass balls with hearts of frick'n lions!! Even the battle right behind the top 3 was Epic...4th to 9th place had their own MMA match going on as well.
Off the start, Danny Ching slowly pulls away from the pack. Hour and half into the race, he is holding about a quarter mile lead on Dolan. At this point, Pat steps it up a bit and exactly at the 2 hour mark, he an Danny are side by side. At the three hour point, Daniel Ching emerges from the gang behind Pat and Danny, and establishes himself in third place....a little over a quarter mile back, but looking solid and closing ground. He is running north of Pat and Danny. At about the four hour mark, Daniel, Danny, and Pat converge. As Daniel slides south as they are approaching the island, the three converge and Daniel establishes about a 50 yard lead on Danny and Pat. Also at this point, a huge black rain squal was developing to the south, which kicked up the wind into their faces big time. No way any human could take anymore from mother nature. But, those three kept cranking!! All three are making a B-line for potluck and this when Pat makes a move to try catch Daniel. It is now Daniel, Pat just about 20 yards behind, and Danny about the same distance behind Pat. Rounding pot luck and heading for China Walls, Pats is drafting Daniel, then pulls along side and both of them get on a bump going along the wall. Behind them is Danny. At this point, no way Danny catch those two. But, all of a sudden, up pops a wave. Danny catches that wave as Pat and Daniel's wave falls off, then next thing you know, Danny is riding his wave right up against the rocks and it carries him up too and pass Pat and Daniel. From here, the three dueled to the bridge. All three went under the bridge together and we did not know who won until later.

Sorry this got long, but the paddling community needed to know. If had video streaming, oh boy you guys would have been jumping out of your seats. Words cannot describe the effort those three guys put out...was unbelievable. Don't think I'll witness anything like it again. Hope Pat gets better.

#51 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 10:38am

RatchetJaws- Mahalo for the visual! Glad you were there to give us that persepctive and to have witnessed that battle. Lucky buggah you!

#52 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 10:54am

From the bridge to the finish line was probably the best finish I seen in any event.
Another good one was when Kai Bartlet's crew won the senior race at Keehi lagoon. Kai was stroking and looked like in the last 30 yards he kickid in a special gear and his crew took the lead and won.

Thanks RatchetJaws for the recap. Always love keeping up with you.

#53 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 11:04am

Mahalo for the recap. I hope we get more stories.

#54 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 12:09pm

Thanks Ratchetjaws, surely there was some video of this event, just the basics would do, 10 mins of the start and the last 10 mile, one cameraman would do.

#55 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 12:23pm

Thanks for the play by play Ratchetjaws! I was wondering how it was all going down while I was suffering somewhere out in the channel.

awsome recap!!!!

#56 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 1:47pm

so one of the most brutal solos will also go down as the closest race in the history of the event. very cool.

#57 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 1:54pm

Props to you Kauaisurf...you did it!! Something you will always remember and not many others can say the same.

#58 Tue, 04/23/2013 - 2:22pm

here's a vid of the finish

#59 Wed, 04/24/2013 - 6:40am

I could be wrong, but I would bet that the average age of the top ten (or even top 15) is the youngest it's ever been? A lot of guys in their 20s in there. Are we maybe seeing a generational shift? Or is it just that since I'm getting older, everyone seems young now?

#60 Wed, 04/24/2013 - 11:57am

That is a very good sign, however, it could just be the weather conditions: for when it is "victory at sea conditions," the old guys still rule...

#61 Wed, 04/24/2013 - 12:28pm

touche koacanoe! also, maybe the old guys are too smart and wise to even do it. haha, just kidding, congrats to all. every single paddler out there was a warrior!

#62 Wed, 04/24/2013 - 1:20pm

Since we talking about noticing things.

  1. Pueo II - Did not disappoint and none of those riders did worse than expected. If anything I think maybe one did better than expected.
  2. Some people did pretty exceptional; let me list - Kae'o Abbey (he hadn't done many races) - Andy Cummings - Lindsay Shank - Phillip Yee - Ingrid (Right behind Indar)

Is there a new design xs or xm? I thought I noticed a difference in a couple of the ones I saw.

#63 Wed, 04/24/2013 - 1:35pm

Conrats to all that participated and especially the winners, but remember, the variables where many. Line up for your new boat, your new paddle, your new hero. Just remember, 4.23.13 was just one day in a life. kgb underground.

#64 Wed, 04/24/2013 - 3:32pm

Since someone mentioned video of the race, I quickly put this short video together from some of the footage Keizo shot in the race. Enjoy!

edit: Doesn't look like it can embed it, but you should be able to find it here:

#65 Wed, 04/24/2013 - 11:13pm

Makana, , just delete the S in https and it will embed.

#66 Thu, 04/25/2013 - 12:27am

Thanks a lot Makana

#67 Thu, 04/25/2013 - 5:10am

Holy crap, great recap by ratchet jaws and Makana's video was top notch. Inspiring crossing this year! Hope to join you all some day.

#68 Thu, 04/25/2013 - 8:19am

Same XM/Xs design. PAt Dolan was on Alex Look's two year old XS. Everyone who finished is awesome. Tom

#69 Fri, 04/26/2013 - 5:11pm
