GPS Tracking - Na Wahine & Molokai Hoe & Any Run

k

Aloha gang! If anyone wants to fully geek out on who has done the fastest run and how the molokai channel races are going, here is an idea.

say for Molokai Hoe If we can get enough people to put a GPS capable phone on the canoes (taped on the outer top-deck real pa'a(firm) in a waterprrof pouch ) then we can use the GPS function on the phone to track each canoes speed and location as they cross the channel (or do a run). We all just need to log-on to the same service so the tracking data is see-able.

After looking around, I found this one called http://www.mapmyfitness.com/app/ (i dont work for them i just like the design of their interface)

There is a bit of configuration (setup an account and register to the event) but it will do the tracking. There's also lots of other competitors, but if we want say 'live comparable race stats' we all need to be on the same service.

If anyone is keen, email me kingi@hoetoa.com and we can try and link it all together on the same service, perhaps even publish a webpage to ocpaddler and facebook so people can check it out live as the race happens.

Yes, this has all been done before, but the previous options require sponsorship, time and money, Im just looking to do it with other paddlers, for other paddles for the enjoyment of paddling.

Aloha,
Kingi

Maybe for the first run just leave the phones on the escort boat that will be accompanying each canoe. This way if any issues should arise durring the race they can be fixed on the escort boat. I look forward to seeing this work.

If you set up the event name then all they need to do is link their app (account) to your event? If that's the case then set up the event and spread the word on here what the event name is.

of course! totally up to the owner of the phone . i have second older phone that i dont mind putting on the canoe (it a prepay, hope gets data reception over kaiwi channel : -} .

I think you are right,so heres a try at those links... if you have time and get it working on your app or webservice, join the event (or something) and see what happens?

My guess is that if we can get enough teams on it then it would be really fascinating to see the race unfold (can even watch it after we paddle as the data is saved)

If anyone is able to get a crew can you post on here that you got a crew checked in the event. The more people see others are doing it the more it will convince teams to do it.

I'm working on 4 womens teams now.

Awesome idea kingi. Hopefully crews are willing to participate. This would be cool!

SCORA was tracking all races two years ago when I raced in California. Contact Mike the SCORA president and he can clue you in on the app. and cell phone set up. He was trying to make it mandatory if I am not mistaken. It was pretty cool, they had a big screen at the finish that you could follow each boats course.

k

it looks like the app mapmyfitness was more orientated for personal activity as I cant find a way for users to add themselves to an event, and easily publish online.

i am trying this one http://www.mapmytracks.com/ we will have a maximum of 10 participants and then it needs to be paid for... :{ .

their website is insanely slow!!!!!

shoootS!

Whoa, it gets pricey fast. I know garmin lets you map workouts, speeds, and whatnot but unsure if it can update live. I remember the surfski solo had some tracking too. But have no idea what they used.

Brah! I fully just thought of that last night while drinking a green bottled hydration drink.
That would be EPIC!!!

Kingi, there's also this. The Garmin Fit app. App is free and for 1.99 a month you can broadcast your race live. Looks like only one person at a time. But it seems like if people paid the two bucks you could have a page with each crew's link posted. People could watch split screen. Unfortunately not everyone would be shown on the same map?

I think Garmin or something similar that uses satellites is the way to go. Pretty sure you're going to lose reception for a good chunk of the race if you rely on cellular towers. And if the phone is on the canoe, not sure the app would reconnect on its own once you came in range of Oahu. Of course I've never assiduously checked how many bars my phone gets across the whole channel, so could be totally wrong about a dead zone.

im following andrea millan (Beach Boys), heres her link except i cant get any data, might need verizon or satellite phone?

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/profile/39332379/live

i agree gonna need some consistent data connection across channel. was havin a brief email exchange with Mike from SoCal and he says the Spot is the way to go. he likes it plugged into kattack, but when i looked at price of Spot gen3 tracker http://www.findmespot.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&...

i also think the interface needs to be really simple

1 map,
2 dots with boats,
3 a ranking list trianglutaed from the canoes distance from the finish buoy (just need some math to caluculate the miles between the canoes GPS position to the next closest buoy marker (ie quarter mille off diamond head and quarter mile off hilton)

Great idea brother Kingi. Let me know when you get a good platform for this to work.

I did have my phone on the escort boat. I have Verizon. It appears as though I had a bit of a signal when I first turned it on then didn't have a signal again until we were pretty close to Oahu. Therefore, the program just drew a straight line between where it lost the signal then picked it up again. Then not long after that my battery died! Batteries don't last long with the GPS constantly searching. Was pretty cool though when it did work!
