anyone know who Team Hawai‘i is? scary that Shell is in third, over two minutes behind the leader.

#2 Wed, 11/06/2013 - 3:34pm

The Shell that's 3rd is their "second" team... Shell's A team is 14th, 10 minutes behind... I think that they will have a bad time with their coach and with the president of the club.

The guys from Hawaii were wearing yellow shirts with "Hanalei Canoe Club" printed . They come from Kauai.

It sounds like Shell A team took wrong line and got smashed. Since the race is on overall time, it will be interesting to see how things play out today.

see the link in the first post on this thread. it's all there. official results for day two not up yet. looks like Hanalei is shown as Team Hawaii in the results. they're the only hawaiian crew there. day one had them in 65th. not sure why they're listed as Team Hawaii. was pretty sure it's mostly Hanalei Guys.

on another note there's also a Hawaii paddler racing with the guys from Mahina Hoe. go get em Alika!

Tomorrow exciting finish to this great race.Too bad have to wait so long for Olamau.

#13 Thu, 11/07/2013 - 5:39pm

I think only a couple of the Hawaii guys have ever even done this race before. Not an "all star" team, just a group of friends from the north shore.

#21 Fri, 11/08/2013 - 4:33pm

Hiro C,

Can you give up the recap from Tahiti? I have some questions I can;t sort out? Is Va'a Connection a local group of friends or do they recruit superstars. Of course they are all superstars. Why was Va'a Connection so strong?

It appears that Shell split its team in a strange way and they paid for it. Also they took bad line on first leg. Did they overtrain? What are people saying?

So I am entirely convinced that if the top 30 Tahitian clubs came to Molokai Hoe, They would most likely take the top 30 positions, with the possibility of a few US/Hawaii all star crews. It was an amazing experience to be able to race against the best in the world and get our asses handed to us on a silver platter.

Just decompressing from the last 5 days of experiencing the most insane (insanely good) Tahitian paddlers, supporters, and hectic sleeping, bathroom, eating arrangements.

Just to be clear, we went as Hanalei Canoe club, and some how got listed as Team Hawaii.....which was far from reality. Aside from losing both of our steersmen before the race; we were a group of guys who for the most part, have never done an iron race longer than Kona

We went to Tahiti with one goal in mind, to experience the essence of Paddling in Tahiti.

With our main goal accomplished, we managed to take out a couple teams. The last day was really interesting, because we were battling against Tahaa Nui for the final hour. The battle felt like it was a race for a top 20 finish at molokai...but it was for 69th place.
I understand that they had some help from Shell for the Molokai Hoe, but the 5 guys I got a chance to chat with said that they were in the Molokai Crew.

It was an amazing experience and I wish every paddler would get the chance to race it at some point in life.
Stoked on Paddling Connections Victory, as well as OPT getting 3rd.

Paddling connection is not a star team, like shell or opt. They're just friends, more like family in fact. Speaking about Shell, I found it very disappointing : they withdrew from the race after they hulied in the channel during third leg. But many other canoes hulied, sometimes more than once, and they finish the race, no matter what their rank is. Shell should explain why they did it.

Wilfred (coach paddling connection) dont train as long as shell, edt, opt etc.. But he's a very smart trainer. He was part of the Great Mobil Vaa team.. They love crepe with choc/nutella before the race!! Congrats Kauaisurf to you & your team, great achivement!.
