ITBS Knowledge in OC Paddling

Good Morning !
In the last couple of weeks we did a few hard training sessions in preparing for the first race of the season in Berlin. Especially we were focused on strong leg drive. Unfortunately it seems that this focusing on leg drive led me into another painful ITBS phase (Iliotibial Band Syndrome). Actually I got into paddling after leaving several other sports because of repetitive ITBS occurrences.
Does anyone of you know what aspects of OC Paddling Technique are prone to ITBS ? Are there any experiences of other paddlers with this awful ITBS ?

Hi again !

After searching a little while I found some interesting links. It seams to be an aspect in SUP Paddling (by the way: ITBS if better known as Runners Knee) and this thread in a Surfski Forum:

And another one (also paddling related) about a muscle I have never heard of before:

Still nothing out of the outrigger canoeing world ?

The reason I moved into the paddling world was due to runner's knee. Still to this day I am unable to run like I use to be able to. That being said I have never suffered issues from runners knee while paddling. Leg drive is important aspect as to what your doing, make sure you are engaging your hips with ever stroke. We have one paddler in my boat who will actually get down on one knee when paddling, he is almost in a squat position the entire time. I would try and make sure that your legs are locked and your are not bouncing.
Good luck

Hi Joelm !
Thank you very much for your advice an good wishes. I will try to lock my legs better. I think in the last weeks I developed an inward tendency - keeping my knees close together. Probably that is why the ITB gets under more tension than usual.

I did find another very good internet resource:

I downloaded the ITBS tutorial. Extremely good stuff - strongly recommended.

All the best to you
