The Great Peanut Butter Challenge

moved from other thread.

so someone else had this idea and it sounded fun. try predicting your Moloka‘i Hoe top 10. make a pool with a bunch of people. everyone sends their top ten list to me via private message or email. also as a tie breaker predict the overall winner's time. could even make it interesting and say... pay 10 peanuts per list. closest person to the actual top ten and closest to winning time (if there are ties) wins everyone else's peanuts. we can figure out a system of say one point for every place OFF you are in your prediction. LOWEST point total wins.

sound like fun? PM me your list and winning time prediction. if you like i have a secure jar to handle all the peanuts. at the end someone will get a nice big jar of non GMO organic peanut butter.

sound stupid? never mind.

might as well treat the super bowl of paddling like the super bowl...

this is not gambling. that would be illegal. time to put your peanuts where your mouth is!

I would play along if it were just about top ten Hawaii teams.

#2 Mon, 10/06/2014 - 3:08pm

healthyearth, you don't make the rules.

good idea though. you go head and send me your peanuts and your top ten local prediction. maybe you'll win.

I dig it, but have no clue who has a chance for top ten this year.

ps; Funny how the ads show peanut butter and granola bar ads on the right. This gives me an idea hmm. Car insurance and life insurance pay one of the highest PPC bids, if not the highest, if there is content here about Car Insurance it could change the ad to car insurance ads, which would bring in some serious bucks for ocp. Best rates for car insurance.

yeah Joe, i'm pretty out of the loop too. i'm just basing guesses on last year's race... but i figure it gives me a reason to root for teams one through ten. all of a sudden the jockeying and close finishes in the 4-10 places become more interesting. kinda like fantasy football in a way.

Joe, I like your theory, but somehow the ad algorithm took my search data, your car insurance plug, and combined it into an ad for "Free Laser Hair Removal."

#6 Wed, 10/08/2014 - 9:30am

anyone still want in? just get your picks to me via private message by Saturday night.

#7 Wed, 10/08/2014 - 1:31pm

Free laser hair removal? Where do we sign up?

I actually do have a car insurance ad showing this time, so it worked. Maybe buy me a beer if you see a spike in ad revenue?

JC, do we have to have 10? I gots no idea who is flying in from Tahiti

@joe, nah no need the ten peanuts. but if you want a chance at the peanut butter you need it. i'll post a list of everyones predictions before the race if enough people do it. i think indar posted the confirmed Tahitian crews that are entered in the race. from his post:

"Seven Tahiti crews will be here. Shell, EDT 1, EDT 2, Paddling Can. Air Tahiti, paddling Ohana (40s), and one more Tahiti team. I asked luana. Shell wanted to race Koa but couldn't get one."

for reference, here is last year's top 20.

1 4:53:35 Shell Va’a Tahiti Open Glass
2 4:54:11 Edt Va’a Tahiti Open Glass
3 5:07:54 Taha’a Nui Va’a Tahiti Open Glass
4 5:09:31 Mellow Johnny’s Big Island Open Glass
5 5:16:56 Wailea-Team Primo Maui Open Glass
6 5:20:58 Team 404 Simple Mobile/Lanakila California Open Glass
7 5:21:50 Outrigger Oahu Open Glass
8 5:24:05 Lanikai Oahu Open Glass
9 5:27:21 Tahitian Ohana Tahiti Masters 40-plus
10 5:27:34 Kailua-1 Oahu Open Glass
11 5:28:56 Hanalei Kauai Open Glass
12 5:30:34 Na Koa Kona Big Island Masters 40-plus
13 5:32:11 Keahiakahoe Oahu Open Glass
14 5:34:07 Northern Beach Sydney Australia Masters 40-plus
15 5:35:36 Hui Nalu-1 Oahu Open Glass

BTW my 10 peanuts are in.

anyone know if 404 is coming?

see record times attached for reference

#11 Wed, 10/08/2014 - 9:49pm

Joe, I think I'm getting further from car insurance. I'm now at "Pizza Hut, Hut Lovers Deal."

#12 Thu, 10/09/2014 - 11:04am

I got an ad for a Moen faucet.. I wonder what that means?

#13 Thu, 10/09/2014 - 12:31pm

Spooky. I just got "brain tumor center"

#14 Thu, 10/09/2014 - 12:39pm

think the ads are different for everyone. pretty sure they try and target based on demographic & browsing history of the particular IP address you are connecting thru

#15 Thu, 10/09/2014 - 12:53pm

Some interesting predictions. I'll post some facts about e picks tomorrow night just in case we get more participants in the next 24 hours.

#16 Fri, 10/10/2014 - 9:19pm

Is there a unified Kauai contingent? I recall seeing something somewhere. If so, could be a top ten contender.

#17 Sat, 10/11/2014 - 5:28pm

Here is my peanut :

1 Shell Va'a - 4h40min
2 EDT A
3 Air Tahiti
4 Mellow Johnny
5 EDT B
6 Tahitian Ohana
7 Lanikai

Paddling Connection is not racing otherwise I would place them 2nd.

Some interesting facts from the predictions I've been sent thus far.

EDT got the most picks to win with Shell second most.
Top Hawaiian team Mellow Johnny's. Primo got second most votes for first Hawaiian.
Only two people predict a new record time.
Despite a top ten finish last year only a three people have 404 finishing in the top ten.
Highest ranked "newcomer" is Kaua‘i Wa'a. They're ranked anywhere from 5th to 10th.
Most often ranked club team is Lanikai. Only two people didn't have them in the top ten.
Clubs also appearing Outrigger, Kailua, Hui Nalu.
Only one person doesn't have both EDT1 and EDT2 finishing in the top ten.
Half the people predict Tahitian Ohana, a masters crew, to finish in the top ten.

#19 Sat, 10/11/2014 - 9:44pm

damn there are some pretty good guessers out there... here was the winning list. VERY close to the real results.

1 EDT
2 Shell
3 EDT 2
4 Primo
5 Mellow Johnny
6 Air Tahiti
7 Kauai Waa
8 Hui Nalu
9 Outrigger
10 Lanikai

not everything exactly right but the top ten are all there. everyone else had chosen crews outside the top ten.
