Hi all,
I currently have a dagger rudder on my hurricane which catches every piece of kelp in the Pacific. I am looking into getting a setup which will help reduce this. Does anyone have any weedless rudders / kelp guards for a hurricane, that they are looking to get rid of, or generally any advice on this.
Many thanks.

Hi Andrew, try over at Huki. Jude has rudders for different canoes, including a 4" and 8" weedless rudders for Hurricanes

How well does a Weedless Rudder Vs. a standard rudder work in ocean conditions and controlling the canoe when catching waves or bumps. Just was interested in feedback.

in my limited exposure to them, weedless rudders suck in everything but flat weedy water.

Andrew, Kolohe Girl, the hurricane is particularly bad with weeds because the rudder is straight down. However, you could try a weed guard. It's a little skeg maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch high that is immediately in front of your rudder. All it does is prevent weeds from getting caught/lodged between the rudder and hull. As long as weeds don't get caught there you can usually do a quick back and forth on the rudder to get rid of a weed. If they get lodged the only way is to hop off the canoe... :( But like was posted Huki Jude knows about this stuff and can set you up.

The Huki weed guard that goes just in front of the rudder works great....I don't have to deal with kelp but, lots of other kind of weed both in back bays and off shore......no problems.....and I think you can easily retrofit your boat. Call Jude..
