The question came up regarding the prize money categories for the Inaugural Na Wahine Ikaika women's race coming up on Oct. 11. There will be a cash purse for the following categories of individual discipline: SUP, Prone, Surfski and canoe. The canoe can be either an OC-1 or a V-1. Not enough V-1 competitors to make its own prize money category, but if a V-1 wins the race, then that paddler is eligible for the canoe prize money. Hence why it is labeled "OC-1/V-1". If you look at "$60 for a Hawaii Kai run", it can sound unreasonable. Keep in mind that this is a benefit race for the organization Dress for Success- Honolulu chapter. It's a great cause. If you aren't familiar with it go their website and check it out. If those of us who race oc1, sup etc. can even afford to purchase our own equipment, we are financially way ahead of the underprivileged women who can't even afford the clothes and accessories needed to go to a basic job interview. The capris are the icing on the cake. Several of my friends are entering just for those. Even if one decided NOT to race, you'd still walk away with something for your $$$ and knowing that you supported a local charity.
