Latest post from Kai Wa'a Facebook;
Lead pack is still together. No one has broken away. They're staying mostly North, meanwhile we've got a few heading a little South. Still too far away to tell who is who.

Alright seeing a lot of the white race jerseys (only given out to 15 men) up at the front! Definitely Danny, Jimmy, Kai B., Kaihe C., and Will. We'll give another update when the escorts are released and get close.

That was me. Tweeting comments from four different people on the water and two on land. It was the most hectic and exciting race I've ever gotten to watch unfold. Sounded like a massive battle. Reports had Rete in the lead till he was cleaned out by a wave in Maunalua Bay. He dropped to third after that. Steeve powered through to the win followed closely by Danny C. Sounded like a heroic effort from everyone involved.

What a statement by the Tahitians!

Little or no experience on the OC1 and walk away with top spot, and what should have been top two spots, and four of top five .... Tahitians all on Pueos too. So much for everyone's speculation, I guess that's why the race is held... Scary to think how good they would be with serious training on an OC1...

Wow.

Awesome job by everyone!

To All of you inquiring about the Tracking System. Manny was kind enough to allow the Tracking System be tested on his Relay event by the Race Organizers from the Molokai 2 Oahu Paddle Board Race. The Test was a success and we are hoping to have it up and running for this years M2O Paddle Board Race in July.We still have some Minor Logistical stuff to work out and after we get All kinks out - we hope to maybe have All the Races use this System. This System was not only brought in so Spectators could be informed and follow the Event from elsewhere but so my Race Course Management Team can keep a closer look at where All the Paddlers are for Safety purposes as well, We run the Largest Race Course in the Kaiwi Channel and our Paddlers Safety is utmost important to us. Oh yeah!!! and being able to follow the Race across the Channel from a Tracking System is Way Cool.
Hope you All like the Idea.
Mahalo Nui,
On behalf of the M2O Paddle Board Race Committee of Shannon Delaney, Mike Takahashi and many to mention,
Capt. John "LJ" Benson& Capt. Fritz King of Escort Boats Hawaii and
Race Course Management Team for the Annual Molokai 2 Oahu Paddle Board Race.

I hope all channel crossing races will eventually use a tracking system. The recent M2M incident was too close for comfort.

Would have been really interesting to see all the different lines taken and how fast canoes were going on each line. I think people on the waaay north of the rhumb line got screwed this past race.

#21 Tue, 05/27/2014 - 10:02am

Funny choice of words to say the guys on the north line "got screwed" as oppose to saying they chose to go north, therefore screwing themselves. That way north ride hasn't worked since like 1995 when Gale Berengue led Lanikai to the world record finish by surfing past everyone in the last hour of the race.

JC9O. I think ocken is talking about the two man that sank to the bottom of the ocean between Maui and Molokai during the race.

You are correct. I purposely put it that way cause I didn't want to give an opinion on it, because all to often people attack the messenger and deviate from the staying on the message and talking about the ideas. From following VIM it seemed like your statement is very accurate.

Hmmm... from my observations no one followed the rhumb line. From my position, and, I saw a LOT of backs, there were maybe 3 canoes south of me. The entire line was marching off northward pretty much in formation. I kept questioning myself because I thought it better to make a bee line, and, what I thought I should be doing was not what the majority was doing, so, I kind of split between where I thought I should go and where the line was going. As you can see from my GPS track that was still pretty far north. Anyway, I was south of most people, and, I don't think it really helped. Then, again, all I was thinking about was the head breeze and when it might change.

Here is my GPS track: http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/507948465
