Paddle refurbishing

I have a mudbrook xp that the finish is nearly gone from the shaft. Since it hasnt been used for a couple months, I thought it is probably dry enough to re-finish. After a light sanding, what is the material best to recoat the surface with.

Marine varnish. 5 - 6 coats (or follow manufacturers directions) should do the trick.

A lot of products that cover the shaft never penetrate the wood but only put a coating around it...a coating that easily chips or scratches and once water gets under the product...stains the wood. I sand all the OEM surface prep off the paddle shaft and apply a marine oil...an excellent one Le Tonkinois...first developed centuries ago in China with tung oil as an essential ingredient. Durable,... easy to apply and if there are any scratches...sand and reapply. Protects the wood and lasts over a year. Also an added benefit is that the shaft has the perfect grip...smooth but not slippery...no need wax. All natural...no toxins.
