Tahitians for Molokai Solo

Anyone have a solid count on guys flying over for solo?

I have had a few people tell me there will be about 5.

Rete
Damas
Manu
?
?

confirm or crush my info.

Not that it matters, Just curious.
I have a feeling that this year will be full of tough paddlers.

If the conditions are fair Im assuming the Tahitians will be racing v1. I know of one Hawaiian paddler who has been training to compete against them if they do. Vance Hashimoto is the only Hawaiian paddler I know who has taken the challenge to cross the Kaiwi in a rudderless but also compete against the mass of oc1. Good luck Vance!

although not listed in that screen grab, heard Manutea coming too.

I think this is great. I hope they get good escort boat driver and advice on lines. Just remembered these guys are "Pros" and will have all of that covered in advance. If connected with Pure maybe they jump on the PURE V1 with the rudder. I think we saw a video of that somewhere.

Will the Tahitians take top honors or will they be lost in the shuffle? Will their canoes play a big factor in the race, or will their shear paddling ability rule the day? I think it's worthy of a discussion.

Molokai to Oahu V1 crossings.....35 years ago Tommy Holmes, Dale Hope & Paul Gay (my Dad) paddled from La'au Point to Hawaii Kai in one man canoes. None of them had rudders. My Dad's canoe was either one he brought back from Tahiti a few years earlier or a modified version of it. My Dad finished first of the three. It took them around 8 to 9 hours to cross the channel. The ocean was glassy that hot day! They did this crossing on the same day of the kayak race that year. I was twelve at the time and on the escort with my Mom. I don't think any one else has attempted to cross the channel rudderless (intentionally) since 1979 until this year - this weekend. So far, there are 5 Tahitian men and our own Vance Hashimoto going for it this weekend and I couldn't be more stoked!!!! Good luck to all the paddlers especially the V1's! Verification of this event can be found through Doc Adams who was the race chairperson at the time. Black & white picture is from the Outrigger December 1979 issue via Dale Hope.

From what I saw on the registration from Pa'a Hi fb page Manutea will be racing a Pueo II not V1. Vance will be racing a Kamanu Aukahi. 4 Tahitians listed racing some listed using Viper Va'a. Depending on the conditions, the Tahitians may choose to add rudders? Don't know if that is true.
