Intervals. Do 'em.

Take it slow and learn how to paddle efficiently. Probably the last thing people think about, well at least the slower crews. Base work, working on technique and efficiency will get you there faster.

Being perfectly synced up on starts seems to be one of the factors in successful sprint crews.

I'd start by looking into paddling disciplines such as dragon boating. There's a ton of timing, cadence, and technique involved with becoming effective sprinters. I'd talk to one of your local dragon boat coaches and pick their brain about the science behind sprinting.
