Junior or Kai or Steeve or Manu

#1 Mon, 06/01/2015 - 10:44pm

Daniel chun jimmy travis kainoa kua danny ching all in the mix as well.

#2 Tue, 06/02/2015 - 7:42pm

Junior? Is Karel doing the Solo?

If its Flat - Danny Ching

If its small surf its a toss up between a bunch of guys, any of the Tahitians could win (stevie, Manutea,Charles) Tupuria King could pull off a thing or two. Travis, Bobby Pratt, Kainoa, Daniel Chun, or Kua could blow doors, Danny Ching.

If theres big surf it will be hard to beat Jimmy…unless Karel has been doing some crazy secret training...Any other Pedal ninjas Im forgetting about?

anyone want to put in for their top ten picks????

top ten in order?

only time of year when there is anything of interest on this site.

#5 Wed, 06/03/2015 - 11:20am

i find the classifieds interesting

Steeve
Danny
Manu
Jimmy
Daniel
Kai
Kua
Travis
Kalei
Bobby

Man this is a super stacked field now that i think about it.

i'm sure there are others, but the notables i had to leave out:
Kaihe
Luke
Will
Keola
Kekoa
Manny
Tupu

if he's racing then Junior would be in there too. forecast for the friday before the race is 17mph trades and possibly building through the weekend. that gives Jimmy a decided edge. if it gets too big conditions might favor a higher volume canoe though.., a lot of variables. i don't have access to FB any more so i have no idea who's actually entered.

EDIT: looks like the winds peak earlier in the week and are on the decline towards race day...

Love the commentary. I think the Tahitians, Danny Ching, the big island boys and everyone seems to have forgotten about Pat Dolan. They are all going to be tough to beat. Oh and there's plenty more like Travis, Kaihe, and the Maui contingent as well as kalei, manny, bobby Pratt etc. But the Tahitians are the best in the world so they should definitely be the favorites. I'm just stoke to be able to race again and against the best. Pray for trade winds. The more the merrier.

#7 Wed, 06/03/2015 - 1:34pm

These comments are all the motivation I need

#8 Wed, 06/03/2015 - 3:46pm

Hope surf is big we should know soon! Heard paddling upwind with a dropping tide sucks. Have fun and get to oahu men as fast as you can without any yardsales. aloha hokupaa.

#9 Wed, 06/03/2015 - 8:48pm

i just saw some results from other races this year and was told Kalei isn't racing. had to make a couple changes. someone told me this Charles guy is fast.

Steeve
Danny
Manu
Charles
Jimmy
Daniel
Kai
Manny
Travis
Tupu

it can all change depending on whether the conditions are mild, Jimmy, or somewhere in between.

#10 Wed, 06/03/2015 - 9:05pm

Woa cool Pat is racing?? and I forgot to add Manny,Will, Kai B, and Kaihe to the top list.

This will be one for the books.

#11 Wed, 06/03/2015 - 9:59pm

i wonder how many slices of toast a paddler could make in one channel crossing?

maybe a whole loaf of toast?

Has everyone forgot that Rete led most of the Solo last year and would have won had he not huli'ed in the surf in Maunalua bay?...It was his race to lose last year, and in the video footage, it looked like he forgot he had a pedal actuated rudder on his boat. He totally coulda saved it for the win.

#13 Thu, 06/04/2015 - 12:58am

As I predicted last year, the Tahitians will win. Last year I said Tahitians will hang with top Hawaiians for most of the race to not mess up line and then with 3 to 4 miles to go- Tahitians will turn on the jets and win.

#14 Thu, 06/04/2015 - 4:43am

@scary to my knowledge Rete is not planning on racing. the only two as of right now that Viper Va'a is sending are Steve and Charles.

#15 Fri, 06/05/2015 - 8:02am

@kauaisurf85 if true, that sucks. He had it in the bag last year. He didn't look happy crossing the finish. I felt so bummed for him knowing what happened in the bay. A little local knowledge, and a lot of luck, goes a long way on your approach into Maunalua Bay.

If guys are within striking distance of each other, your bay approach can be money, or lose money. The year Jimbo won was a little closer than the times showed. He was pouring it all out knowing all Junior needed was one more wave or runner to pull up on him.

But sometimes it also depends on how much gas you got left in the tank. Like couple years ago when Daniel had a little lead approaching the bay, and Danny dropped the hammer on him and Pat Dolan. That finish was guts. Probably the most exciting finish.

I digress...Steeve repeat. Then Danny and Jimmy. I'm thinking Jimmy's pretty motivated right now for some redemption from last year.

#16 Fri, 06/05/2015 - 9:52am

@scaryslow i think that's what made last year so remarkable. with no local knowledge, on a course they'd never raced, in canoes they'd never used... last year's top three or four or five must be incredibly lucky.

or kinda fast.

According to the Super Aito 2014 Charles was one spot ahead of Heiva, 17th

#20 Mon, 06/08/2015 - 4:28pm

Tupu will be in there!

#21 Mon, 06/08/2015 - 6:32pm

Forecast on Windfinder now 9mph east winds dropping to 7mph SE winds by midday on race day.

Curious to see if the forecast holds.

#22 Mon, 06/08/2015 - 8:53pm

@kaipu Rete, heiva not racing

@jc with those light conditions the tahitians would seem to have a better chance. Lets all just pray it doesn't swing all the way around. I don't want to see mass drop outs this year.

With the conditions showing light side winds Ill put in my picks, but would change considerably with any shift in wind Direction or speed.

Danny
Steve
Daniel
Manutea
Charles T
Will
Kua
Tupu
Travis
Kainoa

Fire away, Fire Away

#23 Tue, 06/09/2015 - 8:29am

I think this is the current list.

#24 Tue, 06/09/2015 - 12:54pm

Good luck to all should have some bumps hopefully enough so don't have to tap out! Have fun and be safe! aloha!

#25 Wed, 06/10/2015 - 9:59pm

Steeve
Danny
Tupu
Manutea
Will
Pat
Kai
Daniel
Manny
Travis
Kenny
Kua
Jimmy
.... Holy shit, most competitive field ever I think. So I pick Bobby Pratt to win, only because Christian Marston isn't racing.

#26 Wed, 06/10/2015 - 10:41pm

#27 Thu, 06/11/2015 - 7:26am

@ALOEK Christian Marston doesn't know how to paddle for more than 3 hours, so hes going to cheer on the big boys.
