paddle-tics

paddltics : (def) the art or act of pursuing political aspirations within one's own canoe club

Is it just me or are paddlers the most dramatic people in the world?

I paddle in a fairly small club, but it seems like every year someone is unhappy with another person who is coaching, helping maintain club equipment, or doing paperwork. Invariably, the unhappy person ends up forcing out the person they have been griping about. For example: I don't like how so and so is coaching the men, I think I need to be head coach...or don't fix the canoes like that, even though you are giving your time and money for free.

Never ceases to amaze me. And yes, before anyone says anything, I do speak from experience.

 NOW I see the appeal of a one man...

JUST SHUT UP AND PADDLE! that was the slogan of my canoe club on kauai. but it seems that no matter how much you say that it's still gonna happen.

In six man, you can sand bag in secret and rely on the other guys to pull the boat. In one man, your training becomes apparent when the girls pass you by.

There always will be politics in any team sport and it happens in every canoe club. For those who don't want to get all caught up in the politics, one manning is a great alternative. But it's also great to be part of a club and a part of a crew that works together.

There is nothing worse then paddle-tics but you have it in every club. What is worse is favoritism, which is like a bad plague in my club. Paddler A is ok, and the crew looks good. But we are not winning. SO club President or Head Coach, asks old friends to show up and become part of the club, when it is critical for the club to qualify for states. Or the person does not come to practice all week, then shows up on Sat or Sun and boom next thing you know he/she has taken your seat, just because he/she is good friends or co-workers of the coach. I could go on for a while, but I think you get the point. Being part of a club can be rewarding, OC1 is great conditioning work. And a great way to meet other club members. :P

jc9 I soooo agree. Its stupid. Paddle tics are lame. A few people aren't happy with the coach and the whole club suffers.

Then there's a new commitee running the club that are all novices and they have all these great ideas. But instead of asking the people that have been around for a while and been through it all they go ahead and make stupid decisions. History repeats itself. People are stupid.

I agree with all the responses! But nothings worse then having "crooked" people take away your club that you started and founded and all the hard work that you put in! But, funny how karma / bachi works !

Hi ,

You are all right politics suck, they are in every sport or association. We lost some great paddlers to the problem of egos and such back in OZ. My advise is to choose people of power carefully.

Also " Just shut up and paddle " works for me. I am lucky now the guys I paddle with are so stoked to be in the canoe there are no problems.

Enjoy
