What's the best way to ship an oc-1 from CA to Honolulu?

Has anyone done this? Any advice?

My SIL is flying into town for the rest of the year and is selling her OC1 to us. We were going to put it on the barge (Matson) but the cost of the container is more than the boat.

There's gotta be a cheaper way to get it here right? Help!!!

A hui hou,

might be better off selling it. shipping usually goes by length, width and weight. you can try HAWAII OCEAN TRANSPORT.
ask for darlene maybe they can ship it cheaper. they ship out of oakland and long beach. ph: (808)848-0315

You can buy a shipping tube from one of the canoe manufacturers to help prevent damage to your canoe when shipping. They aren't cheap but if you have an expensive canoe, it might be money well spent. The suggestion from ulua54 about selling the canoe might be a good idea. Just to give you an idea, shipping a one-man canoe inter-island costs about $100 so I can imagine how much it would cost to ship it from CA. Good luck.

Use DHX (http://www.dhx.com/)

i've shipped quite a few with them (mostly from HI to CA, but i've gone the other way too). Just build a crate for it (cheap 1/4" plywood). no hinges needed just screw it together like a coffin. drill some holes in the bottom and use rope to strap it into place. cost will be a couple hundred bucks. all depends on weight. they're very friendly helpful folks. i never buy the insurance. it's more of a hassle and costs more than any ding repair you'd ever have done.
